Every now and then the BBC news site produces little gems which either hint at a sparkling sardonic wit or a completely inept team of hacks who don't get out of the newsroom enough.

Today's "europe feature" looks at how Ireland and Dublin have celebrated the arrival of Eastern Europeans, bending over backwards to offer them hospitality (the céad mile fáilte) well paid jobs,
equality, and a venue for their garage bands to play. ... read full story / add a comment

Bush junior, the wicked and foolish, puppet of an even older generation of imperialists and cold war warriors, will be remembered as the most unpopular US president both for Americans and those who live under US hegemony in the wider world.

His is the name which history will credit with the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan and the non-existent WMD.
His is the name which history will attach to the response to the Tsunami, and the natural disasters of 2005 ; the awful yet predicted consequences of Climate Change, "the extreme storms".

In his 2006 "state of the Union" address, Bush Junior, the Supreme Wookie, 43rd president of the USA deals with such themes as :- Leadership, "No Surrender", Troop Levels, "Never Falter", Compassion, Vigilance at Home, Strong Economy, Baby Boomers, Oil Addiction, Human Resources, Hopeful Society, Cloning Ban and the subjunctive "god bless america" thing.

It is important and of Irish interest for several reasons, which can be summarised thusly-
the USA is an important trade partner of the EU and Ireland. We do a lot of business with them.
Most of the citizens of the USA speak a dialect of English which we can readily misunderstand.

The proposed five-year "field trial" experiment would take place from April 2006 to October 2010.

The plan is to grow potatoes which are resistant to blight and won't have to be sprayed with large quantities of pesticides.

The last time a company, Monsanto, carried out genetically modified (GM) sugar beet trials in Wexford and Cork it sparked a wave of protests and sabotage.

The EPA says it will consider any submissions made to it within the next 28 days about risks to human health and the environment by the release of the GM potatoes.

It appears that no environmental or health impact studies are planned. Following a public announcement in the Irish Independent on 26 January 2006, the deadline for related public submissions to the EPA is 5pm on 22 February 2006.

Dignitas was set up in 1998 by Swiss lawyer, Ludwig Minelli, who runs it as a non-profit organisation to assist people whose paliative care is felt to be too ardous and who rather favour euthnasia as an option.

["Dr Michael Irwin said he had provided "advice and encouragement" to five Britons about visiting the Dignitas clinic in Zurich during the past two years. The 74-year-old, who was struck off the medical register last year for obtaining drugs to help a friend die on the Isle of Man, also insisted he was willing to face jail over the issue.
Dr Irwin told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "In the past two years I have given advice and counsel and encouragement to five terminally ill people to go from England over to Dignitas."] ... read full story / add a comment
