After much breast-beating and declarations of firm intentions never to be duped again about reasons for going to war, the UK media is acting as if Iraq/WMD lies had never been told. Media Lens offer a succinct analysis of convenient MSM amnesia as a necessary precondition of yet another illegal and concocted war of aggression on an innocent country. ... read full story / add a comment

The Tommy Sheridan affair probably hasn’t run its course yet: there’s bound to be a few twists and turns left before we can close the book on the whole saga. But it’s possible to draw up a provisional balance sheet after the events of the last few months and see what lessons can be learned.

First of all, it’s important to establish the facts of what happened. It’s beyond question that somebody was lying. The rival versions of the story put across by Tommy Sheridan on the one hand, and his opponents in the SSP on the other, can’t both be accurate. So before we can draw any conclusions, we have to decide who’s telling the truth.

These translations are now available on the WSM web site. ... read full story / add a comment

Latest development for the troubled energy giant in what is rapidly becoming a year of bad news is that the Nigerian election may be fought on plans to nationalise the country's natural resources.

It seems to be an emerging pattern that as energy becomes scarce, states don't like the idea of their oil and gas being sold or (in some cases) given away to transnational companies like Shell.

It seems unlikely, but who knows what is going to happen, maybe the general election in Ireland will be fought on similar issues.

On a day when the minister for justice is moaning about the cost of tribunals, and asking why the money spent there can't be used for parts of the economy which are underfunded like the Health Service, perhaps some smart candidate will start to question why the 51 Billion euro that the Corrib and associated fields are worth could not be used to fund something useful for the Irish economy.

Maybe even a tribunal of inquiry into the giveaway itself.

The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, has managed to gain some international attention after his hysterical attack on presidential candidate, Barack Obama. The seasoned Australian politician knowingly stated that a victory for Obama OR the Democrats would be a victory for al-Qaeda, “I mean, if I we're running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and pray as many times as possible for a victory not only for Obama but also for the Democrats”. ... read full story / add a comment

IRELAND has put off signing a UN treaty that bans governments carrying out forced disappearances and jailing people in secret.

The treaty criminalises anybody involved in the CIA secret renditions and forces countries to prosecute those involved. The US has said it will not ratify it.

Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain have also refused to sign.

They have all been associated with the CIA’s kidnapping of terror suspects and with Ireland will be named in a European Parliament report tomorrow. ... read full story / add a comment
