If you were a feminist activist in Iran today, you would be under the constant threat of arrest for a simple action: asking for equal rights. On Sunday, March 4, 34 women’s rights activists were arrested for silently gathering outside Tehran’s Revolutionary Court to protest the prosecution of four women on trial that morning. The four women’s rights leaders are facing multiple charges including “acting against national security” for organizing a protest for women’s equality in Tehran in 2006. ... read full story / add a comment

by Jack Lane Irish Political Review April 2007 Peter Hart's latest effort to defend his thesis on the Irish War of Independence took the form of a review of John Borgonovo's book "Spies, informers and the 'Anti-Sinn Fein Society': the intelligence war in Cork City 1920-1921" in History Ireland, March-April 2007. In case readers need reminding Hart's thesis is that "…. the Dail had no legal standing and was never recognised by any foreign government. Nor did the IRA, as a guerrilla force acting without uniforms and depending on their civilian status for secrecy, meet the requirements of international law. The British government was therefore within its rights to give courts-martial the power to order executions." (Irish Times, 23 June 1998) ... read full story / add a comment

They are still a bit too fjordish without the sides for my liking. And in this way I am very Irish, we have never settled much below a certain latitude. There's a bunch of welsh cymru speakers in patagonia who never got a silly flag from London and are for all said respected members of the very diverse Argentinian people. So the Malvinas aren't your fault (if you're Irish) and they're not the Argentinians fault. But the blame thing won't bring back the dead. ... read full story / add a comment

US Supreme court has denied an appeal on behalf of inmates at gitmo this afternoon. Read the news at the link. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Scotus-Guantanamo...login This is what Bush wanted. There now just short of 400 people officially at camp Delta which is one of 2 confirmed facilities in the bay. Only 5% of those were captured by US soldiers, the vast majority were bought from Pakistani and a variety of Afghan based militia groups. Yes. Dr Magneto just said "bought". It sounds different to detained, arrested, renditioned, seized, or magically levitated and moved. ... read full story / add a comment

Notice the use of language -- Australian news radio (12 noon) today broadcast that “convicted terrorist, David Hicks, receives nine month sentence...” – shame on ABC news radio, one can only wonder whether the choice of wording reflected the fundamentalist conservative, evangelical christian values of the Howard-loving producer, who will remain nameless in this report. Unlike American loving evangelical christians, most Australians accept “convictions” as a result of fair trials and due legal process NOT sordid kangaroo court 'determinations'. ... read full story / add a comment

The six medical personnel that are to be executed in Libya for the alleged HIV epidemic at the El Fath Childrens Hospital in Benghazi in 1998- deserves a ping. Europe- The EU has called for unity on the issue of what they consider a mis-trial and the EU is not very unified at the moment, especially on Africa. It is not within the Blair Government's foreign policy to accept the EU, it clashes with their own policy of colonialism or neo-colonialism. The ex-colonies are rising up at the moment. Old Europe is clashing with the US/K hegamony and Africa seems to be where the policy of abuse and imperialism is playing out for the Brits. Bush has his own problems with South America. ... read full story / add a comment

The Peoples' Republic of China have today through their ambassador to the UN at Geneva and their state news agency Xinhua called for a new treaty to stop the militarisation of space arguing (quite correctly) the current international law and treaties are not adecquate to the challenges & criminal potential of state and non-state agencies. A very disturbing Ryanair advert published in the Guardian tells us that Gordon Brown's tax on flights is just the state stealing from us. Faye Turney, a married mother of a young daughter, serving in the British armed forces, was shown wearing a black headscarf as she was interviewed and forced to apologise for "aggression" against Iran. The sight of a non-muslim Western woman forced to submit to the misogynist Islamic headscarf demonstrates the bigotry of the Islamic government of Iran and echoes the forced "conversion" of an American reporter and cameraman to Islam when they were captured by Palestinian terrorists last year. ... read full story / add a comment
