Here is an appeal from International Labour Solidarity Committee of the Worker-communist Party of Iran on behalf of imprisoned students, workers and political prisoners. Full text at link. The news on the condition of over 50 jailed students in Iran is very worrying. Last week Ebrahim Lotfollaahi died under torture in the city of Sanandaj. Nearly two months since their arrest and detention, many students continue to be held incommunicado. The Dutch government is bracing itself for violent protests following the scheduled broadcast this week of a provocative anti-Muslim film by a radical right-wing politician who has threatened to broadcast images of the Koran being torn up and otherwise desecrated. Geert Wilders , one of nine members of the extreme right wing PVV party in the Dutch parliament , has described the Koran as a 'source of inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror'. The Taoiseach gets Friday off. Its a long-standing tradition that was facilitated by the Labour Party in exchange for speaking time in the Dail. The images on the Newswire of the Women's Protest in Belfast caught my eye, given the Health and social problems that are becoming evident in Dolphin's Barn, because someone gave Ms Harney 16 Billion Euros to continue to implement her Health Policy which is to close down hospitals in areas that have high populations of young children. I have received over two years consistent appeals by Women's Writer's Unions for aid in advertising repressions of Women Writers , some of the appeals have gone on the Newswire; and some have been passed on to to groups where the campaign would be more effective. The plight of the writers has not in that period alleviated and some are in dire situations. This morning another one arrived, an archive update of the 2007 Women's Day attempt to highlight the cases of imprisoned Women Writers and activists. All their names are familiar, Amnesty, Human Right's Watch, Reporters Without Borders, International Women In Media Federation, Committee for the Protection of Journalists and PEN Women's Union have advocated on their cases. Five of Nato’s top strategists have issued a” radical manifesto” urging the alliance’s member states to prepare for nuclear first strikes in order to counter fanatics who , they claim , are bent on destroying the West’s “way of life” . The vehement language of the manifesto has puzzled some commentators . Robert Cooper, an influential shaper of European foreign and security policy in Brussels is quoted in the Guardian article as saying "Maybe we are going to use nuclear weapons before anyone else, but I'd be wary of saying it out loud." The 150 page manifesto will be delivered to the Pentagon over the next ten days . It is issued at a time of crisis for NATO whose conventional forces face the prospect of defeat in Afghanistan . A certain hysteria has it certain sectors of Spanish & Catalan public opinion following the arrests of 14 suspected Islamist terrorists in the city of Barcelona between Friday night & Saturday morning. In an operation involving the Spanish secret service (the CNI) the Guardia Civil & local regional Catalan police (Mossos d'esquadra) co-ordinated raids made on a bakery, mosque & several flats in the Raval district of central Barcelona. Immediately news services both in the Spanish state & abroad cited further co-operation with amongst others the intelligence services of France & the UK. The Spanish state will celebrate a general election on the 9th of March almost 4 years after the M11 massacre which was falsely attributed to ETA by the then right wing regime. The US puppet government in Iraq, headed by Nouri al-Maliki reinstituted the death penalty in 2004. Since then, they have carried out executions under the watchful eye of the United States, itself a country which kills its own citizens every year. Tara Brabazon is Professor of Media Studies a the University of Brighton and Director of the Popular Culture Collective. She's an author of a few bits & bobs on internet use, media culture & is building quite a profile for herself for attacking Google & Wikipedia claiming that they undermine educational & didactic processes & more than Harry Potter actively contribute to turning our kids brains (& minds) to utter mushy shite. Thing is, her arguments are proving to interest & influence far beyond the generally airified chitchat discussions of Media Studies university departments. Today's "Liberation" the French leftwing daily reports how the "Just say No to Wikipedia!" stickers are appearing across the USA in high schools as well as public amenity libraries. 2 years ago before Sarah Green worked in education, she accepted a job offer from a model & casting agency in Manchester (UK). The resulting video to promote "Hardwear" durable clothing for building sites & other intensive labour work garnered a few prizes on the film circuit. & then most likely Ms Green forgot all about it. That is till her teenage students at the Stockport Grammar School (an independent or private school in England) not only discovered the video clip whilst trawling Youtube for erotica, but let their parents know about it too.
