The letter below was sent recently today to all Irish Deputies (MPs) and Senators in connection with the proposal to re-run the Lisbon Referendum in order to get a different result.

It is accompanied by copies of the two submissions made to the Oireachtas (the Irish National Parliament) Sub-Committee on Ireland's Future in the EU by Anthony Coughlan on behalf of the National Platform Research and Information Centre, of which Coughlan is Secretary. ... read full story / add a comment

The Government spent tax-payers money on an advertisement we have all, more than likely, seen. It is the ad saying, change your world, change the world.
The Green Party now holds office, giving Ireland that positive hope of a greener future. Theres no denying, the Government has not completely failed us. There is a 'landfill' of criticism out there but we do have good and accessible recycling centres, green bins, and some like myself have brown bins.
This is not the point. While we go out of our way to recycle, and are somewhat responsible for our part in changing the world for a more greener safer future. Where do the big businesses and Corporations come into all of this? ... read full story / add a comment

This is an open letter, sent this morning to all TDs using the form at contact.ie, asking for the cuts to education announced in Budget 2008 to be rolled back on.

Feel free to copy and send it yourself to all or any TDs or modify it to suit your own school/constituency.

If only 10% on indymedia.ie users send it to all TDs (about 2,000 people) that will mean 332,000 emails will be sent (2000 users multiplied by 166 TDs) and it will only take you one minute to copy the letter, fill out the form, and hit SEND. I can't but think it might make some difference. ... read full story / add a comment

Galway, Ireland. This was filmed in November 2008. Thousands upon thousands of square metres of commercial space. All of it empty. Everybody is talking about the residential property crash while these buildings lay empty for years. Who is paying for this?
Commercial property is still seen as a sure investment by banks. Why? This is a very big elephant is dancing in the cupboard. ... read full story / add a comment

Everyone knows that an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at GW Bush in Bagdhad in December 2008. It's a story which got its global media coverage with predictable attitudes and spin & could easily be forgotten, were it not for a few factoids & considerations as well as precedents. Which I'd like to share with people here without going into too much pseudo-analytic expertise.

It's all about how shoe tossing was immediately explained to "us" as having resonance with muslims in general and Iraqi's in particular. ... read full story / add a comment

The recent 'Nationwide' programme on the national broadcastor RTE, on the life and times of 'Irishmen in British uniform' on their day to day life in Aldershot army barracks in England as they prepare for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, and perhaps even to the country that gave them birth, peddled a pro-British pro-unionist line that implied both the Irish and British armies are synonymous with each other. Despite the fact that the British army has been engaged in the blatent murder of Irish citizens since colonisation right up to present times, RTE, in the making of this programme, acted like a recruiting agency for the foreign army that continues to colonise six counties of this island. The behaviour of RTE in this matter is both unsavoury and sordid and acts against the national interest. ... read full story / add a comment

Much has been said over the Lisbon Treaty and the future direction of Europe under the heel of the emerging “European Soviet” (Reference to the EU by M. Gorbachev, London 2001). Yet there is little in the way of real debate on the more informative topics of nationhood, sovereignty and “que bono” (who benefits). This article sets out to stimulate such questions. The text of an informative Lecture called “The State of Individuals” by one of Americas most worthy Political Historians is provided for discussion. ... read full story / add a comment

My book Bad Hare Days is generating a lot of controversy, not unexpected given the long running debate on the ethics of live hare coursing in Ireland.
