Twenty ten is the date the HSE say a Cystic Fibrosis unit will be built. Proudly they boast of “fast-tracking” this process to deliver the care that has being so desperately needed for years. This “spin” is never more quickly put into perspective than when a mother or father, brother or sister weep and stare at tossed soil which is beginning to settle where their loved one lays. The upcoming referendum for the Treaty of Lisbon, only voted for by the people of Ireland will determine the future of all European member states. The Treaty is basically a redraft of the EU Treaty rejected by the people of France and Holland, although the majority of political partys where campaigning for a Yes vote in both countries. The Treaty of Lisbon will passed now in France and Holland and all other member states without ratification. Pat Lawlor, Nursing Convenor at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast is currently 'under investigation' by the National Executive of UNISON. Pat's alleged 'crime' is that he spoke out in support of striking classroom assistants and for daring to criticise the actions of the leadership of UNISON. During the classroom assistants strike, Pat did what any decent trade unionist should have done - publicly supported workers on strike. The regional leadership of UNISON refused to do so. Their actions actually undermined the classroom assistants pay and conditions. Because Pat chose to express solidarity with workers in struggle, he now faces disciplinary action being taken against him. He may even be expelled from UNISON. ... read full story / add a comment

Statement regarding Dublin Zoo Orangutan escape. The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR) is saddened by hearing of the Oranutan Maggie's bid to find freedom yesterday even to the point of leaving her baby ' The understandably frustrated animal has been confined in an enclosure for 24 years, more than the length of a sentence that would be imposed on a human for the crime of murder. Zoos are but Prisons to non human animals, yet they have not committed any crime. It's amazing that an active politician, albeit of the right, has found himself in the privileged position of both funding and financing a hate crime movie. The man know the laws of his country and is an elected official thus we can all presume that the only reason that he made it was for ego-indulgence. Lots of politicos do that- its called abuse of office. How far we have come from being privileged to study the word and poetry of Islam? Sufism provided many international writers with an area of study and cross-cultural pollination that has benefited Western art and literature in the poetry of Hughes and the writing of Lessing , to name two. A major and imminent threat to women’s rights looms in the amendments being put forward to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. ‘Pro-life’ MPs aim to reduce the time limit for abortion from 24 weeks to as little as 13 weeks. Although the Labour Party formally defends the current time limits, Gordon Brown like his predecessors will allow a free vote, so as to appease the significant and vocal anti-abortion section within the cabinet. From reports, it seems likely that there will be some reduction, probably to 20 weeks, given the current balance of forces, as there is strong support for such a move among Tory, Liberal Democrat and Labour MPs alike - all of whom will have a free vote. On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. Mumia is innocent. He was declared guilty and sentenced to die because of his revolutionary politics and because for years he had been a thorn in the side of the racist rulers of the misnamed “city of brotherly love.” Around the world, millions have come out in defense of Jamal.
