A major and imminent threat to women’s rights looms in the amendments being put forward to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. ‘Pro-life’ MPs aim to reduce the time limit for abortion from 24 weeks to as little as 13 weeks. Although the Labour Party formally defends the current time limits, Gordon Brown like his predecessors will allow a free vote, so as to appease the significant and vocal anti-abortion section within the cabinet. From reports, it seems likely that there will be some reduction, probably to 20 weeks, given the current balance of forces, as there is strong support for such a move among Tory, Liberal Democrat and Labour MPs alike - all of whom will have a free vote. David Cameron has taken the lead by announcing that he will be using his vote to lower the limit. ... read full story / add a comment

On March 27, the U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia reaffirmed the frame-up conviction of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the former Black Panther Party spokesman and world-renowned radical journalist who has been locked up on Pennsylvania’s death row for more than a quarter century. Mumia is innocent. He was declared guilty and sentenced to die because of his revolutionary politics and because for years he had been a thorn in the side of the racist rulers of the misnamed “city of brotherly love.” Around the world, millions have come out in defense of Jamal. This latest ruling, like all those that preceded it, shows that the exploited and oppressed must have no faith in the racist injustice system. We call on the workers movement to mobilize its power to free Mumia now! ... read full story / add a comment

Below is a letter that I recently sent to about 120 newspapers. A small number have got back to me to say they are featurising the story. Others are publishing it as a letter. The Sunday Business Post got in contact to see if it was sent to anyone else (I haven't heard from them since I said it was; my personal thought it that if it's not their scoop, they're not interested). It has also been sent to Tesco (without a reply, yet!). Feel free to copy/distribute/send to Tesco. ... read full story / add a comment

Maureen Kenny Has died, a true lover of education and books, many will have a memory of the Labyrinthe bookshop, the smell of the books and the friendly family who ran it. You could find yourself tripping into Mr Kenny's office and getting a lecture on dropping out of college, work; and where the bestest poetry books were kept. Many of us miss the old shop with the low ceilings and the carpetted stairs and Maureen always had a smile- did not matter if you were the Laureate or a small writer, everyone was united by love of knowledge and books. ... read full story / add a comment

Bundoran has the most scenic views of the Donegal Bay, Dartry Mountains of Leitrim and a coastline accessible to everyone. We preserved our old historical buildings and respected our community atmosphere. In the last twelve years Bundoran Town Council has allowed Planning Corruption erode the very HEART of Bundoran and now the greedy developers and certain Corrupt Councillors want to destroy our Foreshore not or enhancement but to built apartment blocks on the most beautiful coastline in Ireland. In the last twelve years the population of Bundoran has decreased now these greedy developers want to destroy Bundorans Sealife. ... read full story / add a comment

This is a brief article on our position as Latin American Solidarity Centre regarding the "free trade" agreements of the EU with Asia, Africa and Latin America, disguised as Economic Partnership Agreements and Association Agreements. On the series of events organised for Latin America Week (April 7th-12th) we will bring some speakers from Italy, Holland, Colombia and Ecuador who will speak on the impact of such agreements over basic services such as water. To find more information on Latin America Week, you can go to our website www.lasc.ie or contact us directly. ... read full story / add a comment

Last year, the EU Constitution was defeated in referendums in France and the Netherlands. Europe’s governments quickly got together and rewrote the constitution as an incredibly complicated list of amendments to existing treaties. Together these amendments make up the “Treaty of Lisbon.” Valery Giscard d’Estaing, the president of the Convention on the Future of Europe which did much of the ground work in drafting the constitution, has concluded that “the difference between the original Constitution and the present Lisbon Treaty is one of approach, rather than content”. ... read full story / add a comment

The old adage ‘You can fool some people some times, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’ comes to mind when summing up Provisional Sinn Fein’s ‘grass roots’. At what point will they stop being fooled and maybe step back and question the honesty and integrity of their party leader Gerry Adams ? Having once been a supporter and admirer of Adams I now find it difficult to listen to him. He was interviewed by Ursula Halligan on TV3’s The Political Party on Sunday, March 2nd . I have not read any comments regarding this interview on any of the usual sites where this might be debated or discussed. The first part of the interview was taken up with how Sinn Fein got it so wrong in the 26 counties Elections and what direction they where now taking etc etc. Ursula then went on to ask Adams………… ... read full story / add a comment

Two intellectually lazy revisionist views have gained ground in the popular Irish historical mythology in relation to the Easter Rising. 1) That the Easter Rising was a a deliberate romantic blood sacrifice by rebels who knew in advance that they would fail. 2) That the Easter Rising was a terrorist act. ... read full story / add a comment |
