international / rights, freedoms and repression Sunday December 18, 2011 - 04:58 by BrianClarkeNUJ   text 2 comments (last - monday december 26, 2011 - 11:33)   image 1 image
Eamonn McCann was born in Derry on the small island of Ireland. He was one of the organizers of the Civil Rights Association (NICRA) at the start of the present troubles. McCann's politics are based on class analysis. He personally participated in many of the critical events in Ireland including the Battle of the Bogside in 1969 and Bloody Sunday in 1972. He writes for the Belfast Telegraph and the Derry Journal, and Hot Press magazine. He is a regular political commentator on the BBC, RTÉ and other broadcast media. He is also Trotskyist and a prominent member of the Socialist Workers Party in Ireland. He is Chairperson of his branch of the National Union of Journalists and Vice-Chairperosn of Derry Trades Council. Being a Trotskyist, i'm sure he won't mind a citizen journalist 'lifting' his following article from the Derry Journal. McCann has been a key part of the solidarity between the Irish civil rights movement and the Black civil rights movement in the U.S. ... read full story / add a comment

Today, at Kazakhstan’s independence day, more than 3000 people assembled peacefully in Zhanaozen, to promote the demands of the oil workers who have been on strike since May. Police and special forces attacked the meeting and opened fire on the strikers and their families. By around 10 a.m., London time, 50 had already been killed, with at least 500 more wounded. ... read full story / add a comment

I fully support Independent TD Thomas Pringle's call on people to support a campaign not to pay this hideous Household Charge (Poll Tax!!!). Mr Pringle says he will not register for the tax, nor will he pay it. Well done Thomas Pringle :-) At last we have we have some principled TDs in An Dáil Éireann who are prepared to suffer personally for their beliefs they know are in Our Country's And People's best interests. ... read full story / add a comment

Is is justifiable to be a member of the catholic church with its history of child abuse cover up, anti women ideology, pro capitalist policies? All those who supported McQuaid and opposed the mother and child scheme have to condemned. They slunk away before the catholic church with their tails between their legs. A Chara, Our 'leaders' are trying to wave through a terrifying Merkel/Sarkozy plan that would abolish our right to choose sane economic policies and that would permanently ban vital public spending - all to appease big banks. But we live in a democracy and we should have the right to vote on any permanent changes to how Europe operates, and together, we can stop our leaders trashing our democracy and our jobs. ... read full story / add a comment

Marxists have been predicting the disintegration of capitalism for so long that most people - including most Marxists - stopped believing it would ever happen. But today anyone who reads the financial press knows that the system is in an unprecedented crisis with no clear way out. The following articles offer a variety of ways of understanding the crisis so we can begin to create a world beyond capitalism: ... read full story / add a comment

1. Wars have been the most terrifying phenomena people have confronted since the istant past. In our society, millions of Iranians have been living under the ominous shadow of the eight-year war with Iraq. The reminiscences of air raid sirens, damp shelters, overnight power cuts, nameless bodies, severed limbs, mothers who lost their children, children who lost their fathers, famine and hunger, homeless refugees and dozens of other frightening pictures at the back or forefront of our minds, vividly or vaguely, whether like a nightmare or a constant fear, is weighing down on everyone of us. ... read full story / add a comment

Cartoons have become explosive, underlining deep political fault lines in the new world order and more often than not, concealing bigotry and diverting debate from racism and imperialism to the much abused concept of “freedom of expression”. The latest episode was started by a cartoon published in Ha’aretz in which the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defence Ehud Barak, say farewell to troops on the way to bomb Iran, while asking them to bomb the UNESCO offices in Ramallah on the way back. ... read full story / add a comment
