Last June, during the voting on the referendum on citizenship, an exit poll of 3.300 voters which had been commissioned by RTE Radio, found that 36% of yes voters at 166 polling stations agreed that the main reason for their vote was because 'the country is being exploited by immigrants.' Another 27% had agreed with the statement that 'there are too many immigrants in the country.' It may surprise some of those voters who believe that immigrants (the bulk of whom are here on approved work permits) are costing us lots of money, that we are still receiving large transfers from the European Union. ... read full story / add a comment

The war on Iraq was illegal, fraudulent and has killed many tens of thousands of innocent people, and making this war is very probably a war crime. But the Americans commit war crimes every day in Iraq. One such war crime was the Haifa Street massacre, which occurred last week and which was televised. Jonathan Steele has courageously written a clear and insightful analysis of this massacre in today's edition of The Guardian. This posting examines Steele's position and asks why criticism of American war crimes in Iraq is so rare. ... read full story / add a comment

The end of the Civil Service pay dispute has been a bitter pill for NIPSA members to swallow. NIPSA members have fought the governments for eight months firmly believing that our campaign was about fundamental issues. As the dispute developed that view was confirmed. This dispute has been a struggle for the right to be properly recognised as a trade union including the right to negotiate on behalf of members, it was a struggle for the end of low pay in the Civil Service and it was the a struggle to end pay inequality. Unfortunately in the final settlement none of these issues was properly addressed. ... read full story / add a comment

It is strange that while it is often said that the purchase of a house is the biggest decision which most people have to make, newspapers make no claims that property reviews are objective. Nevertheless, they are presented under journalists' bylines, sometimes following a site visit, but the resultant copy does not differ from what an estate agent would produce. ... read full story / add a comment

In order to evolve from our current , stagnant state as human beings; to progress to a higher level of understanding and purpose; to realise radical cultural change and evolution...and to alleviate conflict around the world; we must stop competing against each other for energy. This can only be achieved if we learn how to fill ourselves with energy from sources other than each other. ... read full story / add a comment

In 1974, Spain, Portugal and Greece were run by dictatorships and together with the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, democracy in Europe was an endangered specie. By joining the EU, countries have strenghthened their democratic structures and the same opportunity is available to Turkey. In recent times, the human rights situation has improved and the repression of the culture of the minority Kurdish population has been eased. ... read full story / add a comment
