This morning as thousands of delegates went to the Ard Fheis of Sinn Fein in Dublin to discuss policing matters & shock the unionists by saying "yes" & of course include plastic bullets in the list of lethal weapons - elsewhere the road to peace, dialogue & inter-community relations seems as daunting as ever before. The Basque moderate nationalists PNV who hold and have held the democratic majority in Euskadi launched the counter-offensive against the Spanish state judiciary who have put the Lehandakari (taoiseach) in the dock "for talking to Batasuna". Meanwhile thousands of people including many hundreds of "heavy weights" from the world of culture & intelligentsia concentrated in Barcelona to demand dialogue more than 80 entities took part including all left wing parties & Catalan nationalist formations & many Basque peace groups. ... read full story / add a comment

I was quite surprised at the reaction of the Report by Nuala O'Loan on Collusion and the murder of innocent people during the dreadful Troubles in the North of Ireland. My surprise is like that of the Haughey Repoirt and corruption, it proves that inspite of the fact that we all know, denial takes over. Some years ago, Nuala O'Loan gave a report on the 1998 Omagh bombing. Her reporr then was thorough and very well investigated. Afterwards, Ronnie Flanagan, the then Chief Constable of the RUC, when he said in public 'I will commit suicide if one single statement of this report is true'. At that time Nuala O'Loan criticised the handling by the RUC before and after the Omagh bombing. Nuala O'Loan had come across serious evidence that the RUC ignored vital information which may have prevented the attack. Last Tuesday in his State of the Union address, Bush was explicit about the future of the US war machine in Iraq and further afield : "to design and establish a volunteer civilian reserve corps. Such a corps would function much like our military reserve. It would ease the burden on the Armed Forces by allowing us to hire civilians with critical skills to serve on missions abroad when America needs them". The recent Special Branch buck passing fiasco is proof that the PSNI is far from reformed. As relatives of those murdered by UVF serial killers under the thumb of Special branch have found out,, Special branch are still in no mood for admitting culpability in murder. This evening I was listening to Minister Michael McDowell on Radio 1 at 5 O'Clock in relation to the murder of the young innocent man last night. This 'Dying Wasp' has an amazing lifespan. McDowell spoke of a research committee on how to tackle organised crime. In considering the recent revelations about Mark Haddock’s UVF career at tax payer’s expense, as a killer informant for the RUC, let us not forget Ian Paisley. Last week the Historical Enquiries Team of the PSNI was forced to apologise to Eugene Reavey for the RUC whispering campaign that tried to justify the sectarian shooting of Reavey’s three brothers in January 1976 in Whitecross, south Armagh. The shootings happened the day before the Kingsmill massacre of 10 Protestant civilians on January 5 1976, in the same general area. The name "National Disability Authority" had a certain ring about it when it was set up in 2000 A.D. It seemed as if a strict teacher was being appointed to the task of preventing disabled people from being bullied any longer. However the fear now materialises that "authority" is the last thing disabled people want in their lives. Indeed most people are uncomfortable with the idea of authority and we all resent people who set themselves up to tell us what we can and cannot do. A cynical observer might conclude that the NDA has morphed into an organisation which colludes in the oppression of disabled people? ... read full story / add a comment

In the closing weeks of 2006 an opinion poll in the Basque region found over 65% of people there found a return to terrorism "most likely". In the closing weeks of 2006 Spanish prime minister Zapatero said he would carry personal responsibility if the process failed. In the closing week of 2006 a french youngster was held captive whilst his father's van was hijacked & then filled with explosive & driven to Madrid's airport where it was parked on the 29th. The next day 2 Equadorian migrants went to work just as usual & didn't get out of their cars in time to avoid being the first people murdered by ETA in several years.
