Idealists and utopians would claim that this phenomenon is the beginning of the disentanglement of the public sphere and political debate from the traditional dominance of political parties, big business, corporate media and vested interests who dictate what can and cannot be discussed, what is relevant and what is news-worthy. The political participation of the ordinary citizen could eventually be conducted entirely through electronic means. Instead of representative government it is suggested in the future technology will enable all citizens to engage in the ongoing political debate. The pattern whereby citizens vote at the end of each government term with paper ballots could be replaced with a form of direct democracy. History would have turned full circle as a global village like the ancient Greek city states would decide its priorities bypassing the traditional power structure of wealth and power. I write this letter to you the Fishermen of Erris, to your association, and to you all as individuals, and as men, in the light of Shell ‘intransigence‘, as you put it, and the arrival of Shell’s pipe-laying ship ‘the Solitaire’ off our shores. It seems Shell have hit a right nerve with you guys and you’re very correct to be reacting with the defiance you’re adopting … again and at this time. I’m sure you’re considering certain legal action to protect your fishing rights in Broadhaven Bay and beyond, and very good grounds indeed you have to do that, and succeed. But I wouldn’t be relying on that alone, if things don’t work out like! If the law makers are making laws for Shell and Shell only, those ‘laws’ should be disobeyed in any case. Every generation has its political rock band: The Fugs, The Clash…and Rage Against The Machine. RATM formed in Los Angeles in 1991 and released the self-titled debut a year later, one of the definitive CDs of the 90s. The cover featured the image of the “burning monk”, who burned himself to death in 1963: an ultimate image of commitment and protest. The music was a highly potent mix of metal, funk, rap, and anti-capitalist politics. They made two more albums and a hard-driving CD of cover versions of political or socially-conscious rock and rap songs (including Springsteen’s “Ghost of Tom Joad”) after which they fell victim to internal arguments, and split in 2000. I believe that the deal between Dublin City council and JC Decaux, swapping the space on public footpaths for 126 billboards in exchange for a couple of hundred bikes has all the hallmarks of a corrupt deal. The concept of class is fundamental to the anarchist understanding of society. The goal of anarchist communism is to create a classless society where everyone is on an equal footing, where all have equal access to wealth and contribute to society as best they can. Why then do anarchists argue that only the working class has the power to create a free and equal society? Many figures in the economic and political elite argue that we now live in a classless society.
