A Chaidre, The 1st Annual General Conference of the Independent Workers Union (IWU) will take place on Saturday the 3rd of April 2004 in the Victoria Hotel, Patrick Street, Cork. The union will be formally launched at this event; an event that promises to be of great historical significance in the life and history of all working people on the island of Ireland. Subsidised accommodation in the Victoria Hotel works out at €40 per B&B in room 3 persons sharing. €45 per person B&B 2 persons sharing. Monica's B&B is half the rates as mentioned. Bus Workers have made it quite clear that they want no concessions to Brennan's privatisation agenda yet despite this the NBRU are entering yet another round of sham talks on Thursday while CIE workers are striking! Because of this the Busworkers Action Group (BAG) has called a protest for this Thursday, March 18th. March assembling outside the talks venue at the Department of Transport at 10.30am. I'm appealing to all, not just bus workers, but other workers, residents and community organisations to come along and participate on Thursday. read full story / add a comment

Workers at Coca Cola plants began a hunger strike today in Colombia. It is the latest action by the Union Sinatrainal, who supported by the Colombian Trade Union Congress (CUT) have called for an international boycott of Coke products. read full story / add a comment

With all that's happening at the moment, what with our 6-month EU Presidency, and the various protests, both Trade Union and others taking place against this, and a general upsurge in militancy and general discontent generally, we in the Independent Workers Union (IWU) feel that now is a good time after almost 3 years to formally launch the Independent Workers Union (IWU) with our inaugural Annual Delegate Conference in Cork on Saturday, April 3rd. Residents Against Racism are organising a public meeting to discuss the upcoming referendum on asylum seekers and refugees.
