Irish Poet Ross Hattaway has been invited by the Lithuanian Writers Union to read at the famous Lithuanian Poetry Spring Festival this year. The Poetry Spring Festival has been running since 1965. It involves readings by Lithuanian and international poets and draws attendees from all over the world. Readings take place in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and in other towns around Lithuania. Previous readers at the festival have included Fiona Sampson (UK), Stewart Conn (Scotland), Christopher Merrill (USA), Julie Kane (USA) and Banya Natsuishi (Japan). It is a huge festival on the international poetry calendar and we are honoured that Ross has been chosen to represent Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Following our recent efforts to stage solidarity vigils with the NVDA in D.C. to Shutdown Guantanamo, I received the sad news that Peter McGregor died on the J11 day of actions.I had been in regular email contact with Peter leading up to the J11 actions - the 6th.anniversary of Guantanamo's opening. On Friday 1st February Shell Oil will announce their profits for the year (last year they announced that they had made £20 billion) and to mark this Shell to Sea in Belfast will be holding a candlelit vigil outside Belfast City Hall to remember the victims of Shell's money grabbing and to ask why they can't afford to send their gas refinery in Mayo offshore. read full story / add a comment

Last January, the peasantry of Nandigram in West Bengal, India, rose up to prevent the State Government from expropriating their land and transforming it into a special economic zone for the Indonesian-based Salim Group. 2 years ago before Sarah Green worked in education, she accepted a job offer from a model & casting agency in Manchester (UK). The resulting video to promote "Hardwear" durable clothing for building sites & other intensive labour work garnered a few prizes on the film circuit. & then most likely Ms Green forgot all about it. That is till her teenage students at the Stockport Grammar School (an independent or private school in England) not only discovered the video clip whilst trawling Youtube for erotica, but let their parents know about it too. A Public Meeting to launch the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) Campaign on the Health Service will take place in Liberty Hall at 6p.m.on Monday 11th February. One to pencil in your diaries as this will be a big campaign and issue for the Unions this year. Spread the word and forward this email onto as many as possible! This is personal with me! Without going into detail, I personally know people who are very ill, and who could die if they don't get check-up, examinations, tests and treatment soon. Of course, if they have money, they will get seen to straightaway. It's not right!
