Having a Baby in the 21st Century

Date: Wednesday February 20th 2008 at 6:00 pm
Venue: RCPI, No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2

This meeting forms part of the RCPI Public Meeting Series “Promoting a Healthy Nation”, aimed at informing members of the public on key healthcare issues and to provide an opportunity for the public to communicate their concerns to the College.

The aim of the February meeting is to discuss the important issues concerning the promotion of safe and effective obstetric services to the women of Ireland. Recent years have seen an enormous increase in caesarean section rates, and ultrasound is playing an increasing role in the provision of antenatal services. Increasing consumer expectations and the increasing number of births are simultaneously applying pressure on current staffing levels and resources.

Ms. Miriam O’Callaghan, journalist and broadcaster, will chair the meeting and the speakers include; Prof. Deirdre Murphy, Trinity College Dublin and Consultant Obstetrician, Coombe Women’s Hospital, Dublin, who will address issues surrounding the choice of mode of delivery; Dr. Daniel McKenna, Consultant Obstetrician, University College Cork, who will outline and illustrate the role and importance of ultrasound in the provision of maternity services; and Dr. Michael Geary, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Master of the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, who will highlight current issues concerning the safety of the mother and baby in pregnancy and childbirth.

This meeting is open to all members of the public and you are welcome to invite colleagues or friends who have an interest in this topic. Registration is free but as places are limited we ask you to RSVP to Ms. Edel Harrington by emailing [email protected] or telephone (01) 8639700.
