View all the trailers @ www.myspace.com/galwayafricanfilmfestival Galway One World Centre, Galway Film Society and The Huston School of Film and Digital Media are delighted to bring you Galway's first ever African Film Festival. While this festival offers an opportunity to see new films fom African directors, it will also be a family event with music, food and children's animation. The festival will screen a selection of films from various countries in Africa that will showcase the wealth of talent in African cinema. Like the generations of emigrants from Ireland who enjoyed the culture of their home country in places all over the globe we hope that Galway's Africans will enjoy a glimpse of home and other Galweigans will be presented with a view of the range of cultures and experience the vast continent contains. Due to the funding received from Irish Aid there will be no charge for any of these events, however tickets must be obtained from the Town Hall Box Office. read full story / add a comment

“Rodent and bird Glue traps are an extremely cruel method of killing animals. we believe that if people knew the degree of cruelty associated with these devices they would want no part of them. The are illegal under the wildlife act (approved traps, snares and nets) regulations 2003. However the sale or possession of these traps will have to be monitored to eradicate them completely. So far Atlantic,Swords and Murtaghs Co Meath , among other rural stores have removed them immediately when told by us that they were illegal.We appreciate their cooperation.-most are imported and they are also openly for sale still on the internet .AFAR members will be reporting all shops selling them . read full story / add a comment

One of the main conclusions of our former publication [1] have been that the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is in effect new elections in Ireland. The issue of the Lisbon referendum is of even higher relevance than parliamentary elections, because the decision on ratifying the Lisbon Treaty is not merely to elect temporary representatives into the next term of the government and the parliament, but - upon transferring the current powers of the nation state of Ireland to the federal state in Brussels – it is a decision on accepting or rejecting the permanent construction of a new federal government and parliament. Without publicising this fact the ongoing government campaign to promote a ‘yes’ vote on the referendum amounts to the deprivation of the voters of their most fundamental democratic right to meaningful elections. The present study offers further evidence for the above statements by revealing the general erosion of democracy in the countries targeted by the Lisbon process. read full story / add a comment

On a recent trip to Belfast/Northern Ireland I wanted to find out who is really to be accepted as being a progressive force up there. The Left has generally supported those pro-catholics, who are working for a united Ireland as a part of a national liberation struggle from London rule. I decided to interview representatives of progressive parties on either side on the issues that socialists should really care about -- social issues -- to see how different they really are in their day-to-day politics in these current times of peace. read full story / add a comment

Since being told by the Intelligence Ministry in Bushehr on 12 May that Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi have been transferred to the Intelligence Ministry in Kermanshah, their families’ attempts to find out where they are being held have been fruitless. On 18 May Fouzieh Khalesi [Moradi’s wife] approached the Intelligence Ministry she was violently attacked by Ministry officers who tried to arrest her. This was resisted by those accompanying her, which resulted in Fouzieh getting an injured leg. Several of those with her were beaten with rifle butts. read full story / add a comment |
