The Center for Public Integrity reports on details of leaked legislation in preparation which will continue the erosion of the traditional system of checks and balances that is supposed to be built into the American governmental system. Specifically the separation and balancing of the powers of the Executive and the Judiciary are supposed to make sure that the neither can do too much damage. This new, proposed legislation furthers the weakening of the Judiciary surrendering some of their powers to the Executive. read full story / add a comment

Here in Colombia, the Green Berets are pursuing one of Bush's most important, and perilous, foreign policy initiatives. With all the talk about Iraq and North Korea, Washington has done its utmost best to keep Colombia quiet. Risks include losing North American lives in a conflict that does not have the same so-called ''popular support'' as the mystery hunt for al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. Washington has a big stake in Colombia... read full story / add a comment

While we have been repeatedly told what a great financial boon to the Irish economy and the Shannon region in particular there is from allowing US war business there, it now turns out that the total take for all warplanes in 2002 was a measly 9 million euro. Just enough to buy one of the eight new turbo propellor training aircraft for the Air Corps. In total Minister Smith on January 16 2003 gave 60 million of our euro to a consortium of mainly Swiss Bankers for something we don't need while chldren need proper schools and the sick need proper and prompt care . He even spent 6 million on improving the runway for the arrival of his new toys! read full story / add a comment

The Catholic Worker 5 appeared in Aer Og court this afternoon, near Ennis. Deirdre, Damien & Nuin all received bail of 3000 euros each. The conditions are that the three will have to sign on at their local Gardai station twice a day, are banned from entering the county of Clare and can not come within a one mile radius of the US embassy. Although someone in the court room offered Karen a local address she was remanded on the grounds that she has no fixed abode. Ciaron has also been remanded as according to the judge he is far too 'passionate' about what he believes (and damn right too!). Next court date set for 21st of February. read full story / add a comment
