The most needy, most deprived are indeed very poorly served by the political establishment in Ireland. There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that most crime is linked to poverty, social exclusion, educational disadvantage and dysfunctional parenting, often each are combined. If we really want to reduce crime, we have to invest in the education and welfare of our disadvantaged children right from birth and even before birth.
Early school-leaving has consistently identified as a major risk factor for offending, but there are no systematic supports for those at risk of dropping out of school.

On 21 February, the Italian coalition government fell when the Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, resigned. This crisis came just four days after the magnificent 200,000 strong demonstration in Vicenza against the government's decision to approve the expansion of the US base in that town. The government did not get an overall majority in the Senate for a motion outlining its foreign policy, including keeping troops in Afghanistan and maintaining 'good relations' with the US. read full story / add a comment

The recent controvery about risk equalisation and community rating took a dramatic twist when Sean Quinn of the Quinn Insurance Group offered to take over the policies from BUPA that have expired and offering to continue their cover under the new insurer.

He has also requested all those who have accounts with VHI to move to BUPA due to the overcharging as he sees it of equal policies and coverage provided by the quinn group under BUPA.
