folks, I would like to appeal for comments on what I see as a weird twist of priorities amongst many Irish people campaigning for social justice around the country. I just read an article on the An Phoblacht site at http://www.irlnet.com/aprn/current/news/15stud.html - It's about a young Catholic student being beaten to death because of his religion. This is Alabama and it's only a few hrs from Dublin. I realise the importance of reclaim the streets, the earth summit work, travellers and refugee rights, racism work, sustainable development etc. etc BUT - are brothers and sisters are under daily attack. It seems we have been collectively brainwashed to consider 'the north' as an unsolvable problem that we must leave up to the champagne politicians of all sides. Do we really care about the North. Has anybody even bothered to travel there. It seems many in the 26 counties can't even name read full story / add a comment
national / miscellaneous / news report Thursday August 22, 2002 14:21 by Mags
Thirty-four years ago this week, on Aug. 24, 1968, the Northern Ireland civil rights movement staged its first protest march. Organized by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association and joined by several like-minded groups, the march protested against the notoriously discriminatory housing allocation policies of local governments throughout the province. Despite threats of violence from loyalist thugs inspired by the rhetoric of the Rev. Ian Paisley, 2,500 marchers turned out and marched without incident from Coalisland to Dungannon. The event marked the end of Catholic submission to Protestant domination in Northern Ireland and raised hopes -- hopes soon shattered -- that nonviolent protest could achieve civil, social, and legal equality for all in the six counties. ... continued at link below read full story / add a comment

Irish Teenagers Against War And Capitalism (ITAWAC) is a newly formed organisation mostly as our name suggests made up of teenagers but also with some younger kids as well. And in great change from most of the middle class yuppie shitheads who bloody clog up this IndyMedia Ireland we're a grassroots working class group in areas such as Sherriff Street, Coolock and Ballymun. We're still trying to tie down our exact positions on a lot of issues but we're gettin there. There is a lot of anger amoung teenagers and kids about the way our society is run that if it's not tapped into by people of our generation will lead to the re-emergence of left wing freedom fighters like the Red Army Faction and the Red Brigades. read full story / add a comment

THE EARTH Summit starts in Johannesburg, South Africa, next week. World leaders will talk about tackling poverty, dealing with the environmental crisis and embracing "sustainable development". US president George W Bush is hostile even to making such noises. This could lead some people to think that the summit must contain something good. read full story / add a comment

Irish peace activist in the Jenin Palestinian refugee camp, Caoimhe Butterly, was on Tuesday injured, along with three Palestinian teens, as Israeli troops moved into the camp. Two of the Palestinians are described as critical after they were shot in the chest as soldiers opened fire on stone throwers while Butterly was reported to be lightly wounded in the leg by shrapnel. Religious fanatical Chutzpah knows no bounds. But, when you are, God's Chosen people, normal rules don't apply to you. It is perfectly acceptable to criticize any nation on the earth for its errors and wrongs, but lo and behold, don't you dare criticize Israel; for if you do that, you will be accused by the programmed masses of the most abominable sin in the modern world, the unforgivable sin of anti-Semitism the weapon of mass distraction and Censored! read full story / add a comment

Reply to the SWP Open Letter on Nice Issue 180 of Socialist Worker contained an 'open letter to the left' on the Nice treaty. It argues that there should be one united left No campaign rather then four separate ones. This is a personal reply to that text (which can be found at http://www.swp.ie/resources/Open%20letter%20to%20the%20left.htm ). I'm posting this reply to indymedia.ie as it obviously won't be published by Socialist Worker but the issues raised need to be discussed by activists. read full story / add a comment

folks, does anybody know how to go about voting from abroad - how I can do a postal vote eh? I tried a few government websites etc. and they don't make it easy for you to find - wonder why? Reminds me on the graffitti on my street that says 'if voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal!'. Still, this Nice gig is a disgrace to any tokenistic democracy we have and MUST be opposed.
