STOP RACIST ATTACKS
Rally at the GPO
3pm Saturday 24th August
Called by Globalise Resistance
and Chinese Students United
Last weekend, 50 year old Leong Ly Min was attacked by a gang in
Temple Bar who hurled racist insults at him. He died of his injuries
days later. Leong Ly Min had lived in Dublin since 1979, since he and
his wife had come here as refugees from Vietnam. All his children
were born here in Ireland.
In January of this year, 29 year old Zhao Liu Tao, a Chinese student
of English, was beaten to death with an iron bar. He was attacked by
a gang of teenagers who again taunted him with racist insults whilst
they beat him. Many foreign students, immigrants and refugees now
fear to walk the streets of Dublin at night. Daily, they are spat on,
have bottles, eggs and stones thrown at them, and are often the
victims of brutal, unprovoked racist attacks.
Many Irish people who lived abroad in Britain were at the receiving
end of racist assaults from thugs. We were called Paddys and Micks
and told to go home. In Northern Ireland, people are beaten,
intimidated from their schools, have blast bombs thrown at their
front doors and are killed- all because they are Irish.
The majority of Irish people have no time for racism, and it's about
time we showed it. This Saturday, a rally is being held at the GPO
against racist attacks and in solidarity with all immigrants and
refugees who have come to our shores. People of all colours and
nationalities should have the right to live, study and work here in
peace.

In the case of Barrett I have the feeling that he wouldn't mind asylum seekers having abortions in Ireland in order to prevent them gaining Irish citizenship. It's the feeling I get off the kind of politics that he represents. I dont usually trade personal insults on indymedia but I think Justin Barrett warrants one, frakly he looks and sounds like he's been stuck under some floor boards for about 10-15 years.
I think the slogan 'Stop Racist Murders' should not be used, not because I am a racist but because I believe that in order to tackle racism effectivly we must put forward class slogans that tackle the roots of racism, I would favour a slogan such as 'Jobs Homes Services not Racism'.
I'll see if I can make it along, but I am fairly busy at the moment.
I agree with Bliss, this is not a time for SWP bashing. The demo should be supported.
I have mailed AFA contacts regarding it.
I also mailed Anthony Coughlan with the details of the demo.
The main message that should be conveyed at this demo is that people have united to oppose racist attacks.
As socialists we in SY we call for and indeed state in our manifesto, " The rights and cultures of all people living here to be respected."
A good turn out from all would show a message to bigots that racism and racist attacks will not go un challenged.
I agree with Finghin on the "slogan 'Stop Racist Murders' as simply it doesn't cover the root cause of racism. Racism is created by Capitalism. Is anyone born a bigot or racist? No I don't think so. The causes of racism and the stereotyping used by the establishment must also be tackled.
I believe that what happened to Leong Ly Min was wrong, likewise the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in this country by the political elite and the fact that they have allowed for a vacum of racism to be created is simply disgraceful and is further evidence of Capitals unsustainabilitily.
Racism will serve no one but the Capitalist Establishment.......Young people have the most to lose in a racist Ireland.
Well I think that the immediate issue here is the murder of course! I don't see how it couldn't be otherwise. Now in the course of stating our total opposition to this latest murder, the real issues like the SP cmdes have listed have to be bought to the fore especially with the Nice Treaty 2 in the background to all of this.
Now one of the slogan could be "No to Racist Murders- Jobs and Houses for all", thats fine.
Its a serious issue, but the swm playing games with it and shouting loonie slogans through megaphones with inaudible acustics, all along the length of O Connell street will only serve to confuse ordinary people about the issue.
Irish racism is deeply engrained in Irish culture. The Travellers have been its victims for generations. The recent, racist, anti-traveller legislation was passed without hardly a murmur from the mainstream political groups. First they came for the Travellers.......
Last I read in the media, the cops were not treating this as a racist murder. They 2 people they have arrested were also questioned about an earlier assault (on Caucasians I would assume).
Given that neither the cops nor the media are the most accurate of sources (to say the leaset), does anyone have any more info on these attacks other than a GR press release?
.....and then they cam for the Iraqi's!

To hijack someone's death in order
to promote your own little deluded
ideology is quite frankly, disgusting.
If some right-wing little Tory shit
came along and tried to turn a protest
against something into a rally for
capitalism, everyone would quite
right thump the oily freak.
If you want to fight racism, good.
If you want to promote your political
agenda, fine. But don't wave the corpse
of a dead man-who probably never even
_heard_ of your group- against your
political opponents.
