UCDSU has been campaigning for the end of what is effectively free labour by the health services over the past few months. Student nurse do up to 8 week placements with no expense including travel and food to which they are entitled. Equally they have to do 5 week placements outside the academic term. Within this time they have to seek alternative accomodation because no landlord gives a14 month lease. They cannot claim the grant. They have to work up to 40 hours a week for nothing. This is blantant exploitation and student nurse are being used as a mop to clean up the mess within the health service. Say no to free labour, say no to students being used as a free hands kitt, show your solidarity and march with these students from the dail to the dept of health at 2pm thursday 15th. read full story / add a comment

There were angry scenes at today's INTO conference when delegates attacked the union's endorsement of a 'killer coke' stand in the conference foyer at the main entrance to the conference. Handwritten posters protesting Killer coke were distributed around the conference. A petition was circulated among the delegates and a number of speakers denounced the stand to loud applause. One delegate, John McAnulty of East Down INTO, halted the business of conference under standing orders to demand the removal of the stand. He condemned what he claimed was a deliberate policy of support for coke - one third of INTO Northern delegates had voted for a boycott, The union had been contacted by Columbian trade unionists and were well aware of the boycott call. They were also aware of the debate in the trade union movement and that even unions opposed to the boycott stopped well short of actually supporting or promoting coke. Does Alcoholics anonymous/narcotics anon work, and at what price?. Why is it so hard to kick an addiction the Alcoholics anon/Narcotics anon way?. It is so hard because AA/NA insist you abandon a way of life which brings you into contact with drugs/alcohol/having fun, or a rebellious lifestyle which may cause depression, leading to drug dependency. read full story / add a comment

On Thursady the (9th of April )last I had the opportunity to engage in dialogoue with An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, while he went walkabout throughout his constituency.It wasnt very pleasent Imust say, as at times Bertie liberally used the four letter word throughout our encounter,and constantly spoke to me in a patronising manner. read full story / add a comment

Joe Higgins has announced thathe will stand in the upcoming Euro elections in the Dublin area. Also running from the left are Sinn Fein's Mary Lou McDonald and the Green Party's Patricia McKenna MEP. The SWP are rumoured to be still considering standing Richard Boyd Barrett in the Euro election. From the establishment parties, FF are running two candidates, Labour also are running two, Fine Gael on and the PD's are still considering whether or not to stand. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has launched a petition from politicians calling on the European Council and the European Council of Foreign Ministers to insist that Israel cease construction of the separation wall across Palestinian land on the West Bank. If Israel does not comply, the petition says, then the human rights clause in the EU-Israel trade agreement should be invoked to suspend Israel's favourable trading rights with the EU. read full story / add a comment
