Solar farms are an ecological disaster. Birds frequently fly into them, mistaking them for water, while electrocution and incineration are common. But you won't hear about this in the mainstream media, says Chris Morrison.

There was a further shift to the left at the annual conference of the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA), the largest union in the North, held at the start of June. The outgoing General Council (Executive), which had a right wing majority, was defeated on a number of key issues.

Socialist Party member, Carmel Gates, stood down as President due to the convention that a President serves only three years. However, the hopes of the right wing that they would take back this position were dashed when Billy Lynn, also a Socialist Party member, and a long standing activist in the union, was elected in her place. read full story / add a comment

I reprint an article I had written a few years ago that was carried in the main Northern Newspapers at that time.

-Friends over the last weekend yet another two young men took there own lives in my local area. This is a growing tragedy that I must admit that when reading of such increasing growing deaths, it brings a lump to my throat..

For oneself I would have thought that those involved in the conflict would have found it more difficult to adjust {and many have}. Yet it seems teenagers and those in their twenties {the children of those at the forefront and brunt of the war} are finding it even more difficult.

This is a situation that needs to be addressed and addressed urgently and many good community activists along with parents of those deceased are campaigning actively on this.

The situation is getting worse and I believe that all support that can be, should be forthcoming to such campaigns, both in the forefront and in the background on this matter., read full story / add a comment

A chara.
The brain drain from the poorer developing countries to the rich capitalist countries is having a huge impact on the people of these countries.

While we in Ireland are the benefices of such a brain drain the impact upon those countries from which these medical personnel come from is overlooked, ignored.

Cuba’s approach to international solidarity and the assistance that it gives to many countries is in sharp contrast to the approach of our own and other developed countries.

We would like to invite the public to come along and hear first hand about the internationalist role played by Cuban doctors. The Cuban chargé d’affaires to Ireland Teresita Trujillo , will address this subject on Wednesday 15th June @ 8-15pm in the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square (West). All are welcome. read full story / add a comment

The International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands, was established by European nations of the €U under the Rome Statute as the last court of international crime.

It is the only international court which is permenant and ratified and stablished to promote the rule of law and ensure that the gravest international crimes do not go unpunished.

It is not completely recognised by the USA which resents its "inteference".

It has opened investigations into Darfur-
“The investigation will require sustained cooperation from national and international authorities. It will form part of a collective effort, complementing African Union and other initiatives to end the violence in Darfur and to promote justice. Traditional African mechanisms can be an important tool to complement these efforts and achieve local reconciliation.” read full story / add a comment

"I'm here because it’s about time my generation actually took some action rather than watching things on TV and thinking 'isn't that awful?' "
Zoe Anderson, 26, East Belfast

"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.
Of course the task will not be easy. But not to do this would be a crime against humanity, against which I ask all humanity now to rise up.
Make Poverty History in 2005. Make History in 2005. Then we can all stand with our heads held high....
Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.
While poverty persists, there is no true freedom."
