Earlier this year Hugh Brady held an address that was open to students. During the A&Q period two students asked him questions about accessibility at UCD. One student who uses a wheelchair brought to his attention that not all the entrances and washrooms were accessible to her and other students that she knew. Then another student asked him about getting audio materials for those with visual impairments. To both of these questions he deflected the responsibility to the newly appoint vice-president of ‘students’ and encouraged them to lobby on the issues. read full story / add a comment

Cycle Campaigners renew call for "cycle track network" plans to be scrapped as Dublin figures show 16% drop in cyclists. There is widespread concern among Irish cycling activists - that government "cycling policies" are primarily about facilitating motorists and promoting a switch to mass use of private motorcars. There is established historical precedent for such attempts in other countries. read full story / add a comment

Despite the Minister for Education Noel Dempsey's repeated mantraof social inclusion and widening access to education, the government has systematically targeted the most disadvantaged sectors of Irish society and reneged n virtually all its election promises by introducing cutback after devastating cutback. Since being re-elected in 2002 there has been a constant erosion of funding for schemes aimed at assisting those from disadvantaged backgrounds. read full story / add a comment

The Limerick-Clare based Mid-West Alliance Against Militarism and Aggression (MAMA) have followed the Cork Anti-War Campaign lead and disaffiliated from the now completely misnamed 'Irish Anti-War Movement' (IAWM). Reasons are much the same as those expressed by Cork and Fairview.

Tim Hourigan (Limerick) had already resigned from the IAWM steering committee. read full story / add a comment

Labour Party officials moved quickly this morning to diffuse another simmering row over selection of election candidates with a strong declaration that a convention for the Sligo/Strandhill electoral area had been conducted “strictly above board and in full accordance with party rules”. The statement from the party’s regional organiser, Mr. John Feely came in a response to a claim by Mr. Martin Cadden, who surprisingly withdrew from the contest for selection at Saturday’s convention, that the party head office had “manipulated the system” to ensure that Ald. Jim McGarry would secure a nomination. The row is the latest in a catalogue of differences which have surfaced since Ald. McGarry left Fine Gael to join the Labour Party late last year. On this occasion, Mr. Cadden, who had been expected to be an automatic choice for the Strandhill area for the forthcoming council elections, is claiming his late withdrawal was a protest against head office interference. read full story / add a comment

When the [British] government abandoned its prosecution of the GCHQ whistleblower Katharine Gun, it suggested that Blair had something to hide. The prosecution offered no evidence against Ms Gun, despite her admitting that she leaked information about an American spying operation at the UN in the run-up to the war. She said she acted to try to prevent Britain illegally invading Iraq. Arrested nearly a year ago and charged eight months later under the Official Secrets Act, she is now a free woman. read full story / add a comment

In the latest leg of the race against waste, it transpired that your service charge money is being used to ship waste to India, illegally. Sorry about the cut and paste (IT - pay per view) but I thought somebody in the Fingal anti-bin tax campaign might have covered it. Substantial work has been done by each Presidency since 1999 in their examination of this proposal and the Irish Presidency will actively continue the process of reform with the aim of reaching agreement with the European Parliament before the end of the Parliaments term in May 2004.
In addition the Irish Presidency in co-operation with the Hungarian govt., will host a conference in Budapest in May 2004 involving all 25 member states.
This conference will address both the implications of the reform of (EEC)1408/71 for all member states and the particular implementation challenges facing the new Member states.
This will be among the 1st EU Social Policy Conferences to take place after the formal accession of the new member states." read full story / add a comment
