America has urged Israel to stop building settlements, but under Mr Sharon their number has increased. Yet Sharon says he has to investigate the claim made by an opposition member of the Knesset that a Jewish settler living alone on a hill in the West Bank is being guarded by six Israeli soldiers. The cost is about £27,000 a month, an opposition member of parliament says. Doesn't Sharon know what his troops are up to? Maybe it suits him to keep things like this at arms length similar to the Shatilla and Shabra massacres to maintain plausable deniability? Sharon supports the expansion of settlements despit the fact that most Israelis support dismantling some of the settlements as part of a peace deal, according to recent polls. The settlements are one of the biggest obstacles to a deal between Israel and the Palestinians. read full story / add a comment

An extraordinary communication from the United States to UN representatives around the world has been leaked to Greenpeace. In it, the United States warns that the simple act of support for a General Assembly meeting to discuss the war will be considered "unhelpful and directed against the United States." They further threaten that invoking the Uniting for Peace resolution will be "harmful to the UN." read full story / add a comment

I see from the RTE “news” that the Iraqi Special Olympics team has had to withdraw from the forthcoming games. Such a decision has to be welcomed given the understandable security considerations; some of the individuals accompanying the team could be agents of the Saddam Hussein regime with terrorist activity on their minds. Given the positive role our country has and continues to play in “Operation Iraqi Freedom”, such a terrorist threat has to be taken serious. I know our government and security forces will be on constant alert in order to ensure the safety of all citizens and foreign residents. In these difficult and stressful times, we can be proud that our country is standing by the forces of freedom and democracy, and supporting leaders of courage and determination like President Bush and Prime Minister Blair. read full story / add a comment

RTE Radio 1 and 2FM are to be dropped from Sky's EPG following a row over coverage of the war in Iraq. Sky had already protested to RTÉ about their anti-war coverage, saying it is biased. Although they will be removed at midnight tonight, both RTÉ Radio 1 & 2FM will still be available via the 'Other Channels' menu. They consider RTE's coverage to be anti-war???!!! read full story / add a comment

At least two threads relating to Israel have been deleted from this site over the past 24 hours without any explanation. One on the supply of D9 buldozers and training to the US military, and the other on the murder of Rachel Corrie. Aren't we allowed to post about Israel and the Palestinians?
