For over 20 years Dublin’s working class communities have been ravished by heroin. Each time the heroin crisis became an epidemic the local communities organised themselves to fight back. At last, a book has been written by somebody who was in the middle of this fightback. This book, “Pushers Out”, gives the affected communities side of the story. It pulls no punches and records the highs and the lows of the 20 year campaign. The Coalition of Communities Against Drugs are launching “Pushers Out” in Galway Library on Wednesday 28th at 6pm. read full story / add a comment

Its the Chinese and the internet again. The Chinese love the internet, their state doesn't. & in the last days their state has updated its rules and regulations on internet use and made quite a list of transgressions. They are also asking the public to help information departments at all levels to supervise news sites & report them if the stories are unhealthy. "A new regulation on online news services was issued jointly on Sunday by the State Council Information Office (SCIO) and the Ministry of Information Industry. Under this regulation, online news sites that publish fabricated content, pornography or violence face severe punishment or even closure." read full story / add a comment

Craigavon Trades Council organised another successfull petition signing in Portadown Town centre on Saturday 24th September. As expected the response was very positive and supportive. There being a huge grassroots opposition to the impossition of this unfair double tax. However the one worrying trend was a certain ammount of resignation that for all our efforts the government would push this through come what may. If feel this is due in no small way to the over all lack lustre campaign mounted by the "Coalition".. Craigavon Trades Council can see the potential for this campaign to get off the ground but there seems to be nothing happening anywhere else!! read full story / add a comment

Hamas have just instructed all their militants to return to the pre-Israeli withdrawl from the Gaza strip unofficial ceasefire and not fire any more Qassam rockets at Israel. "The movement declares an end to its operations from the Gaza Strip against the Israeli occupation, which came ... in response to the assaults by the enemy," Hamas's leader, Mahmoud al-Zahar in Gaza said. The assaults referred to were the killing of Islamic Jihad leaders in the last 3 days. He added ""Hamas's interest to protect the Palestinian people from the oppression of the Zionists and to preserve the atmosphere of celebrations at the defeat of the occupation". read full story / add a comment

The Late Late Show 23 September 2005 Congratulations, at last someone has highlighted the disastrous state of the health service in Ireland. I am so delighted to hear that the Late Late Show has highlighted the plight most find themselves in when admitted to hospitals in Ireland. Hopefully at last something might be done to help the vulnerable elderly. Abuse of the Elderly in Irish hospitals is appalling and someone needs to investigate the hospitals in Ireland and how the elderly are treated immediately. In Ireland many of our senior citizens are at risk, vulnerable and invisible in the society especially when it comes to care in our hospitals, which our family have seen and encountered during the past 18 months in two of our Co Dublin hospitals. We were disgusted with the treatment of the elderly, which we witnessed. read full story / add a comment

At the conclusion of an appeal against the six-month prison sentence passed last November, the Danish High Court today gave former Danish intelligence officer Frank Grevil a reduced sentence of four months. Grevil was put on trial for disclosing classified threat assessments that raised questions about the basis for the Danish government´s decision to participate in the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Below is a translation from a Danish news service. read full story / add a comment |
