A group has been formed to force the Irish State and the Catholic church to accept responsibility for the enslavement of 40,000 Irish women during the last century. The women were incarcerated and forced to work as slaves in the infamous Magdalene laundaries. They were physically and psychologically abused. Many died in mysterious circumstances. Some may have been murdered. They are buried in unmarked graves. This atrocity was committed by the Catholic Church aided and abetted by the Irish state. Before reparations can be made it is necessary that these two institutions be made acknowledge the enormity of the crime committed against these women. Unless the isssue of slavery in Ireland is acknowledged by the perpetrators and reparations made to the victims Irish concern about human rights abuses elsewhere cannot be taken seriously. The group is called Justice for Magdalenes and is led by Claire McGettrick. read full story / add a comment

The proposed incinerator site at Ringaskiddy iscrossed by a right of way. Local people have been walking this to reclaim the land. Indaver, the company who want to build this monster have a highly dubious claim on the land. At the time of the oral hearing last year they were not even in possession of the deeds. Next friday members of Cork Harbour for a Safe Environment (CHASE) will travel to Dublin to the High Court to find out if their case can go ahead> This is a national issue. If we can stop this incinerator we can stop all the incinerators proposed for Ireland. Please come and support us , Thanks read full story / add a comment

STATE OF PLAY - Well it 's 18 months since we managed to disable a U.S. Navy war plane at Shannon Airport. The plane was the only piece of military equipment turned around by the international peace movement and sent back to Texas. Meanwhile we were sent to Limerick prison. Initially denied any bail at all, we eventually had very restrictive bail conditions imposed - a ban from County Clare, a ban from a mile radius of the U.S. Embassy & signing on at a specific Garda Station daily. read full story / add a comment

An article in today's Guardian newspaper about a riot at the UK's worst immigration removal centre, the Harmondsworth conplex, begins with a passage which might tell us something about why people there are rioting: "The Home Office today promised a full investigation after the discovery of a hanged detainee led to a "serious disturbance" overnight at the country's largest immigration detention centre. The death was not thought to be suspicious, but staff at the Harmondsworth complex - near Heathrow airport, west London - were forced to withdraw for their own safety." read full story / add a comment

This year's Twelfth of July celebrations were the best I have seen for some time and having listened to various reports from different parts of Northern Ireland everyone seems to be of the same frame of mind.
