Since the military action by the USA, UK and their allies began in Iraq on 20 March, a backlash against certain human rights has been witnessed around the world. These include: attacks on the rights to freedom of expression and assembly; excessive use of force by police against anti-war demonstrators; restriction of asylum rights. With the spotlight focused on the theatre of war, such abuses of human rights have been largely ignored. The following are just a few of many examples recorded by Amnesty International. Amnesty International urges all governments to respect the right of people to express peacefully their opinions, and to refrain from using the war in Iraq as a pretext for curtailing or abusing fundamental human rights. read full story / add a comment

A couple of us have got together and drawn up the pledge below, which calls on the workers in Shannon to refuse to co-operate with the re-fuelling of US military planes. The idea behind it is to try to get a large number of trade unionists to issue the call and also to pledge themselves to support any worker who might be disciplined for doing so. TUCAW has no existance beyond this petition and is not connected to any political party - it is simply one more contribution towards stopping the war. read full story / add a comment

The CGT (an anarcho-syndicalist union in Spain with around 45,000 members) has called a general strike against the war for April 10th. It's calling on other unions to join the strike. Because unionisation levels are very low in Spain it is quite normal for several times the number of unions members to actually participate in such strikes. read full story / add a comment
