The World Trade Organisation's General Agreement On Trades and Services, where government is forced to create an 'equal playing field' through the removal of 'barriers to trade' in the services industries has long been the subject of the anti-capitalist lefts' rhetoric and polemic. Barriers cited by the WTO include "the existence of government monopolies and high subsidisation of local institutions”. It is in this context of attacks on public services that the Irish Government has raised the student registration fees by 70% from 396 euros to 670 euros. read full story / add a comment

Three photos I took at the Salthill airshow in Galway. The first is of some friends making their way to the airshow with placards, scanner, video camera and big smiley faces! Just after I took this photo a B-1B bomber thundered over us (which we're *to believe* doesn't carry nukes anymore, see http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/usa/bomber/b-1b.htm). read full story / add a comment

The AC-130 gunship involved in last week's attack that ''mistakenly'' killed civilians in southern Afghanistan recorded some images of the airstrike, but U.S. officials will not say what the video shows. Last Sunday, the 7th of July, a crowd of 100,000 gathered at the Salthill Air Show. Treated to a display of military prowess billed as the 'greatest free show in Europe', the crowd 'ooh'd' and 'aah'd' as Hercules helicopters, F-15s and a B1 bomber streaked overhead. Defending the air show, The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, who opened proceedings, announced that allowing military aircraft to entertain crowds was not a breach of Irish Neutrality read full story / add a comment

GENERAL STRIKE SEVILLE June 20th Seville ground to a halt today as everyone downed tools and took to the streets in a massive show of unity. Workers all over Spain reclaimed the streets in traditional style protest. Noise Colour and fun were the order of the day, with Today’s Issues centred on Workers rights, Privatisation and lack of unionisation. The loudest (and most colourful) parade was the RED n BLACK BLOC whose Stilt walkers, Drummers, and street theatre turned Seville’s deserted streets in to a carnival. People from all around the world danced around the RED ZONE where the growing police presence looked on. Scuffles on picket lines around Spain are reported to have resulted in 30 arrests and the hospitalisation of at least one person read full story / add a comment
