Seven Irish people are fasting 24 hours as of 12pm today until 1 pm tomorrow when the Greek embassy closes. This is a solidarity action the Thessaloniki 7 who near death. They are outside the Greek Embassy on Upper Pembroke Street (just off Leeson Street). They are accompanied by several supporters and have attached several large banners to lampposts outside the embassy. The Gardai have demanded that the protest move slightly away from the entrance to the embassy. See the reports from before the action here http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62337 The fasters would appreciate any company if anyone is in the area throughout the night. Although the weather is very cold the rain has been very light so far but the fasters are prepared with tarps and tent sheets attached to the railings of the embassy. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Mick Power presented a letter to the Government today. The letter referred to the increase in the length of time that you have to be on social welfare before you can apply for the Back to Education Entitlement Award from 6 months to 15 months. Various speakers took their protest forward blaming the government for its stance, some including the Sean Crowe of SF saying that the time scale should have been reduced not increased. read full story / add a comment

In the last six months nationlist partys in Europe have contested many elections and have surprised many international commentators by their increased share of both left and right wing votes. It is quite apparant that many parties with nominally "left sounding" propaganda have profited electorally from the uncertainty facing new €uropeans at this stage of "neo-liberal globalisation". They seek to find "local" solutions to problems first formulated in the 19th century which in many ways have now been superceded. This is in many ways natural, but it also poses a series of questions. The most important of which may be: "¿are we ready to transcend the _local_ nationalist prejudice model?" read full story / add a comment ![]()

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking at the “issues” including why the Greek Judicial system is being permitted to allow five people imprisoned on the flimsiest of evidence to die. what is the northern ireland assembly really, and how can we persuade the White House to send us Bush for more than week. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Over 100 people gathered outside the US Embassy in solidarity with the huge number of protesters marching against the Bu$h visit. It was a noisy protest calling for the immediate withdrawal of US/UK troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Demands for an end to the use of Shannon as a US military base were made by all speakers. Richard Boyd Barrett, Chair of IAWM, reminded us that the small protests at he same spot during the invasion of Afghanistan grew rapidly, leading to the massive protests on 15 February last. We can do the same again as 20 March has been declared as a 'A Day of Action Against All Occupations'. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Wed 19th a number of activists staged a protest outside Belfast City Hall in the early afternoon. The atmosphere was lighthearted even if the message was not. Resplendent in freshly prepared t-shirts a number of the group performed a series of carefully choreographed manuevres in order to spell out simple but clear messages of abhorence for the Bush visit and the policies of his administration in general. read full story / add a comment ![]()
