Following the successful factory occupation of Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago, the workers of Waterford Glass now show the way to fight redundancies and lay offs. In a year where it is estimated that up to 50 million workers are due to lose their jobs, and banks continue to be propped up with billions of dollars and euro, we need to demand that companies are nationalised and jobs defended. The Direct Action by the Waterford Workers now puts it up to the Irish government- who is more important, workers and their families or the tiny financial elite of the banks. Nationalise the Glass, and let the workers run the factory. They'd do a better job of it. A fundraising hour for Gaza is being held by an Irish charity at lunchtime this Friday. Irish Medical Aid for Palestinians (Irish MAP) is an Irish registered not for profit organisation, established in 2007 with the overall aim of providing the necessary help and support to the Palestinian people in order to protect, maintain and improve their health. Irish Map (Medical Aid for Palestinians) has made an appeal for members of the public to raise money during “Gaza hour”. Do your bit for the suffering people of Gaza. The charity aims to raise €430,000 for medical supplies, which it says is some 10 cent for every person in the country. Due to an embargo on Gaza’s borders, the organisation is raising money for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society rather than collecting medical equipment. Schools, workplaces and community groups are being called on to collect money using activities of their choice. read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday 27th January, Ógra Shinn Féin joined the NYCI (National Youth Council of Ireland) outside Leinster house to demand that the voting age be lowered to 16. Sinn Féin TD Aengus O’Snodaigh was also in attendance to demonstrate his personal and party support for the initiative. The ‘New Age to Vote’ campaign launch hopes to spark a debate on this issue among 16 and 17 year olds, with the aim of opening up discussion forums and campaign groups across Ireland that demand the voting age to be lowered, ensuring young people have a voice. read full story / add a comment

Before Christmas we were told of yet another delay to the publication of the findings of the Saville Inquiry. It is now unlikely to report until late autumn 09, more than 37 years after the events it inquires into. Certainly for family members of the murdered, many who have since died, and those of the wounded who are no longer with us justice delayed has been justice denied. However this delay in justice resonates beyond the case itself which is why Martin Luther King could say 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'. 37 year's ago Lord Widgery's Inquiry took the side of injustice. His report retrospectively legitimised the military repression of the civil rights movement. To him justice wasn't a human ideal he had a duty to strive towards but merely a political consideration of the vested interests he represented. So the ideal was hollowed out to become another tool of oppression. read full story / add a comment

For almost twenty years those of us who argued for an alternative to capitalism were told There Is No Alternative (TINA). We were presented with two arguments, firstly that capitalism was resulting in increased prosperity across the world and over time there would be a trickle down of that prosperity so that even the poorest would benefit. And secondly that socialism meant dictatorship and inefficiency so whatever our ideals it was no real alternative. read full story / add a comment

Outraged and revulsed at the wanton butchery in Gaza and wanting to do more than wring our hands in impotent empathy, a number of concerned people and activists two weeks ago formed a flying picket and for the last two Saturday's protested outside Galway stores selling Israeli products (and one pro-Zionist fast food eatery), urging shoppers with conscience to boycott Israeli goods and food stuffs until such time - to mention just a few our concerns - as Israel complies with international and humanitarian law, UN resolutions, Fourth Geneva Convention, withdraws from the Occupied Palestinian Territories and dismantles its illegal West Bank colonies read full story / add a comment |
