The Home Secretary, Mr. Blunkett chose to resign. There is a need to re-focus in line with characteristics of integrity, justice, equality and honour.........Administratively the vulnerable in Irish society are not being protected - nb the hospital/pension issue at present. read full story / add a comment

Ever since the major disarmament actions in Jan/Feb 2002 there has been an Irish military presence at Shannon Airport. Their mission? To ensure the unfettered use of the airport by the US military. The Partition of Ireland did not create a peaceful state as what was hoped by the British. There was serious tension in the North in the 20’s and 30’s and the Unionists consolidated their state. There were several stringent measures taken in to end IRA action. Many Nationalists believed that the border would be re-fixed so that they could live in the Irish Republic however this never materialized and the Unionists dissolved Nationalist majority councils and took over their power. In 1921 and 1922 Proportional Representation (PR) was ended in General and Local Elections and although this broke the Government of Ireland Act, the British took no action. Nationalists walked out of Stormont in 1922 after the Unionists got rid of PR and the Unionists then re-drew the council ward boundaries. read full story / add a comment

Mordechai Vanunu has been elected Rector of Glasgow University. He won 1033 student votes with John Ross Beattie, the runner-up, getting 793 votes. University students claimed that they wanted Vanunu as Rector to show that they support basic human rights, and that they oppose weapons of mass destruction. In a press release, Annie Vaz says that Mr Vanunu will hold office for three years, representing the students in diverse ways, which can include chairing the University Court. The Rector's participation in events is entirely voluntary and depends on their own availability and choice. The role is principally as spokesperson and representative for student issues. The Rector is not active in University strategy or policy-making. Mordechai Vanunu is at present living in Jerusalem under virtual house arrest since his release from Ashkelon prison last April. He had spent almost 18 years there, eleven and a half of them in solitary confinement. read full story / add a comment

On Monday night (13th December) two women facing deportation with their families spoke out at a Galway City Council Meeting presided over by the mayor of Galway and attended by supporters who packed the public seats. Together with Women in Media and Entertainment (WIME), they have campaigned publicly on their own behalf and for others fighting deportation and the devastating effects of the Citizenship Referendum. They have used the local and national media as well as street stalls, petitions and letters to government to advertise their case. The Other America. BP, US Steel and other corporations bribed the politicians of Indiana to reassess their tax base and reduce their tax liability. The reduction of taxes that followed was then passed onto the taxes on the homes of working class people. 200,000 families are now estimated to be in danger of losing their homes. But a fight back is under way. Cant't Pay Won't Pay with the the bottom line being that nobody will loose their home. These are the main ideas of the campaign. The tactics are mass fight to win action exposing the politicians and the corporations and their corrupt rotten system. Over 130 people met to launch this campaign in Hammond Indiana on monday night. The success of last night's meeting far surpassed anything could have been hoped for. Over 130 residents came out to the meeting in bitter cold temperatures of 20 below. The campaign is under way.
