The Science Museum has repeated the claim that Roberta Cowell was Britain's 'first transgender woman'. This is false, says Zack Stiling. She was biologically female. Worse, she would have hated the trans movement.

national / miscellaneous Friday July 18, 2003 13:38 by Sean Dunne
drinks_1.jpg EXTRACT: The effects of the Diageo ownership became clear in July, 2000, when Guinness announced plans to close the brewing and packaging plants in Dundalk, located just north of Dublin. The move came as a shock to workers and the community of Dundalk. This was the first Guinness plant closing ever to occur in Ireland. The closing eliminated over 300 jobs in a small community, as management justified the move as part of plan to remain globally competitive.

socialiusts.jpgNot for the first time, the Socialist Workers Party has issued a call for debate around the idea of uniting the various Socialist activists, groups and Parties in Ireland.

EXTRACT: "The Socialist Workers Party and the Socialist Party are the two major radical socialist parties in Ireland. Along with a number of smaller groups and non-aligned individuals they have played the leading role in mobilising people in the anti war movement, anti capitalist protests, the campaigns against the bin tax and in support of striking workers. However, on their own, neither the SWP, SP nor any of the smaller socialist organisations can offer a viable alternative at a national level. But as part of a united socialist bloc the SWP, SP and others could create a credible pole of attraction for people looking for a genuinely radical left alternative."

Breaking News: On Sunday 13th July the following report appeared on Indymedia Ireland:
13banner01.jpg 'Up on the northside of town today, there was a strange juxtaposition of revolutionaries wandering around. The first lot were recreating a pike march for a Robert Emmet/ 1798/Bastille Day commemoration. The second lot were a leaderless group of disaffected insurrectionaries, opening the first autonomous zone/space in Dublin since the Garden of Delight next to Christchurch closed its doors in late 1996.' Full report

Follow up reports included Audio , links to the homelessness problem in the city and calls for a 'Working Bee' on Wednessday to help with the renovation of the space.
By Monday afternoon, calls for help as the squat faced eviction appeared here and here. By 5pm the following report had appeared: "The squatted building at 41 Parnell Square west was today evicted. First at around 2pm, a group of 4 men showed up, claiming to be the owners of the building. They had sledgehammers and crowbars and attacked the door of the squat. The police ended up supporting their attack and illegally evicting the people inside. more here "

The right of Travellers to basic facilities such as water and electricity can still not be taken for granted apparently. To find out more I called over to the Traveller's Site in Ballyfermot for the first time recently. I was a bit nervous walking in but was immediately made to feel very welcome by the residents. I met sisters Breda and Tina who told me their stories...
