Irish Independent August 29, 2006

Kevin Myers

ON Friday, June 23, in a village in Surrey, an old man breathed his last, and with him went a connection to one of the bloodiest episodes of the Troubles of 1919-21, and to another, and one of the strangest.

Brigadier Mortimer Kelleher MC, aged 98, was the son of Jeremiah Kelleher, a general practitioner in Macroom, and the brother of Captain Philip Kelleher, DI, RIC. Like Mortimer, he was a holder of the Military Cross.

[Good start, Kevin Myers carries his own cross for the British military.] ... read full story / add a comment

The Belfast High court today lifted most of the restrictions on the Raytheon 9. Veteran Civil Rights activist and revolutionary socialist Eamonn McCann told Blackshamrock.org today that he and the other 8 men facing charges relating to the decommissioning of Raytheon's computers are as of today no longer prevented from meeting up with each other, holding meetings in groups of more than 3, or from attending anti-war functions. Normal bail signing restrictions and the restriction of the nine from the Branch Road, where Raytheon has its premises in the Ulster Science and Technology park, are to remain in place. At the initial bail hearing, the judge had hinted that human rights legislation might prevent the High Court from preventing the Nine from exercising their right to freedom of assembly. The main effect of the lifting of these restrictions, said McCann, is that they are now no longer prevented from taking part in the campaign. ... read full story / add a comment
