Last week DCC claimed that 95% of households have paid the Bin Tax. Today they claimed it was 80%. Here are the accurate figures as provided in a reply to Cllr. Joan Collins (Ind.). Waiver: 40,000 households Fully Paid: 35,000 households Not paid/Arrears: 36,000 households So over half the households due to pay have not paid the tax in full or have not paid at all. This does not take into account the fact that many households have withdrawn from the service (one quarter nationally) and that rates of non-payment are much higher than average in working class areas of the city. Check Indymedia for info on public meetings throughout Dublin this week. ... read full story / add a comment

Ms. Justice Macken is due to decide today on costs arising from Eoin Dubsky's failed legal challenge to US military refueling in Ireland. On December 13th she returned the High Court's judgement, denying that a "war" is an "armed conflict", and thus Ireland cannot be said to be "participating in war". Furthermore it is sufficient for the government to make Government policy verbally, never writing down what exactly it is they have decided to do. ... read full story / add a comment

:-) its a Sunday, and that means "mass" things. & in Chile the mass did the voting thing, and because it is a *legal obligation* of Chilean citizenship when in residence and of suffrage age to vote... Thus there really isn't a "not vote" count. But over 200,000 people have presented their documents in Chilean police stations today to prove they were more than 200km from their polling point. Considering Chile is a country which stretches for over 6,340 kilometres in length, its quite easy to dodge the polls. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Wednesday, a small group of anti-war activists took to the streets of Galway to lay bare, as it were, the psychopathology of the war criminals in the White House. With the sabre being rattled in the face of Iran at the moment, the envisaged plan to attack China and "regionalize" it still viable and the military option against Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Syria and North Korea alive and well on the drawing boards of the Pentagon, we were not indulging in gratuitous bogey man theatrics, be afraid, be very afraid. ... read full story / add a comment

At 3:30 pm, Two Hours of Speaker's Square began in Temple Bar Square, Dublin City. Three regular speakers and one by-stander held forth on various issues, and interjections from many (of the up to 20 audience), were numerous. Speaker's Square or Cearnóg na gCainteoirí is an occasional experiment which was revived in April 2004, and its aim, apart from to engage in stimulating realtime discussion, is to reclaim our public space from its commercial surrounds; and to fill it with ideas and opinions that one are not likely to find in the mainstream media. ... read full story / add a comment |
