The G7 was set up in 1975 by Giscard d’Estaing in order to provide a focal point for the leaders of the most powerful states to have informal discussions on financial and economic matters. It brought together the U.S., Japan, France, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy; in effect, an alliance of the main powers on the ‘right’ side of the Iron Curtain. It was only in 1994 that Russia joined this very closed circle. ... read full story / add a comment

Translated from Le Soir US Ambassador slams anti-war Belgium 11 April 2003 BRUSSELS – The US Ambassador to Belgium has sent an angry letter to the Belgian government, accusing it of blatantly supporting the Iraqi regime. US Ambassador Stephen Brauer lashed out at the government for its refusal to seal off the Iraqi embassy or take steps against any Iraqi officials in the country. In an interview with the Flemish financial daily De Tijd, Brauer went as far as to suggest that the perceived lack of cooperation could result in Nato headquarters moving from Brussels to elsewhere. Foreign Affairs Minister Louis Michel, who came out in support of France and Germany in early February, condemning a war in Iraq without UN approval, was said to be ‘astonished’ by the letter’s content. ... read full story / add a comment

This essay is primarily a scream of pain from a two year old boy in Ireland in 1950, whose life is being wrecked by the civilization into which he was born. The message is interweaved with the tragedy at Ballyseedy Cross because of it's acute relevance, as explained in the text, and also because Irish people have never really faced the events of June 1922 - April 1923. To my knowledge only three full-length books have been written about the period, despite the fact that those ten months have defined and contaminated Irish politics ever since. The essay goes on to identify the solution which will ensure that no more little boys will have to scream in pain as this one is doing. ... read full story / add a comment
