Sick Irish Govt. invites US troops to holiday in Ireland

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday April 15, 2003 19:16author by jevcauthor email fiannafailte at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

This leaked promotional postcard shows the real reason the Irish Government continue to allow US troops use Shamrock Airforce Base - tourism dollars.
43536_1.JPG

US tourist dollars are of vital importance to our economy, and Mr Ahern was quick to spot an opportunity when it presented itself. All US troops entering Shannon for 'refuelling' were handed a complimentary giftbasket containing a pintbottle of guinness, a piece of turf, a miniature bottle of poitín and a selection of 8 Bord Failte commemorative Ire-Aq postcards, created specially for troops "to remember Ireland as a possible future travel destination". All postcards feature images of Apache gunships and F18s flying over some of Ireland's most celebrated tourist sites.

Over 200,000 troops and 800,000 postcards were moved out from Shamrock Airforce Base, and consequently the government expects a €3bn windfall between the Iraq War and the next engagement, thought to be in either Syria, Venezuela or San Francisco's Bay Area.

Actually I wouldn't put it past the likes of Aherne to come up with an idea like this. Hard to believe he comes from near to the same part of Ireland that I do. We are about the same age. How did he turn out like that?

and its not even a good lie either. Next time, how about putting more than 5 minutes into the graphic?

The "céad míle fianna fáilte" should make that clear to anyone that this was not a government initiative.

Still, I think it's not a bad idea at all.
