"I'm here because it’s about time my generation actually took some action rather than watching things on TV and thinking 'isn't that awful?' "
Zoe Anderson, 26, East Belfast

"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.
Of course the task will not be easy. But not to do this would be a crime against humanity, against which I ask all humanity now to rise up.
Make Poverty History in 2005. Make History in 2005. Then we can all stand with our heads held high....
Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.
While poverty persists, there is no true freedom."

Switzerland is not a member of the €U, but has moved steadily closer to the €U in the last years, signing up to very important agreements on many issues including banking, secrecy, exchange of information, migration and enviromentalism.

Thirteen EU member states as well as Norway and Iceland are signatories to the Schengen and Dublin treaties. Ireland and the UK are due to join later this year, while the new EU countries will participate at a later stage.

Under the accords, Switzerland would agree to abandon systematic identity checks on its borders but link up to a Europe-wide electronic database on wanted and missing persons, illegal immigrants and property. ... read full story / add a comment

mayo / environment Saturday June 04, 2005 - 14:05 by Aoife Lee
On Friday 3rd June 2005, Dr Jerry Cowley TD led a delegation to the office of the County Manager, Des Mahon. The delegation consisted of local people from Erris and members of Shell to Sea (Mayo and Galway). Despite receiving prior notification by a member of Shell to Sea, the county manager left the building ten minutes before the arranged meeting time. He returned thirty minutes later and was surprised to find the delegation waiting for him. Let us just say they had words!!!

Dr Cowley presented the letter to the county council, despite the absence of Mr Mahon, calling on them to play a more pro-active role in the conflict between the local people of Erris and multi-national giant Shell. It also called on Mayo County Council to insist on adequate regulation of the entire project to ensure the safety of the citizens of county Mayo.

This weekend, June 4-6, is the solidarity gathering in Rossport, Co. Mayo. All are welcome. ... read full story / add a comment

US born Sarah Pierce is 1 of 5 artists representings republic of Ireland.

Since 2003, Sarah Pierce has organised an art practice involving a number of strategies collectively termed The Metropolitan Complex. Central to this practice is an investigation of the local as a discourse articulated through institutions, artists, art schools, and bureaucracies. Here, the so-named ‘complex’ implicates the psychological, social, and often incidental relationships that form a local scene. For Venice, The Metropolitan Complex sites a Pavilion on the grounds of the Scuola di San Pasquale as an experiment in nationality, history and finding one’s place.
