"Ironically, the only time in Venezuela that a TV channel was taken off air, constitutional rights suspended, and journalists arrested and assaulted since Chavez’s 1998 election was during the two days when he was removed from power in a short-lived coup in April 2002." "While it “condemns” some of the attacks on freedom of speech, it has little to say about the coup regime itself. This is because, for the IAPA, there was no coup. Its July 14 statement said the democratically elected Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was simply “stood down” — not kidnapped and dumped in a different country by balaclava-clad soldiers." ... read full story / add a comment

Serica, the British energy company, has found oil in the Slyne basin, off the west coast of Ireland. Under current licencing agreements, all oil found in Irish waters will belong exclusively to the finder, with no royalty payable to the people of Ireland. All exploration and development costs will be claimed back before tax is paid. Minor changes to the licencing terms, brought in by Eamon Ryan in 2007, won't apply to this find. In a Reuter's interview last year, Paul Ellis, the company's chief executive, said of the Irish exploration: "They are look-a-like prospects to Shell's Corrib prospects, and are attractive partly due to the tax rate in Ireland." ... read full story / add a comment

Founded in 1977, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) is the oldest political organization active in Afghanistan. Its' priority is the establishment of a democratic and secular regime, based on the self-determination of the Afghan people and the recognition of the rights of women [1]. However, RAWA is 'not a humanitarian organization', and its social activism is driven by political goals. As part of a lecture tour in February, Alternative Libertaire had the opportunity to speak with one of its activists, Zoya. ... read full story / add a comment
