Local 100 of New York City's Transport Workers Union has invited Bernadette Devlin-McAliskey to address the union's annual James Connolly and Michael Quill Commemoration on March 14. McAliskey said she was quite happy to accept but didn't know if she could make it as her situation with regard to entry to the U.S. was unclear. On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The court reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast. ... read full story / add a comment

The 1st of March was an eventful day for the rag tag bunch of peaceniks that arrived from Belfast.I feel that the carnival atmosphere of the day was only slightly marred by the overzelous arrests. As peace campainers we must remember always that 'violence creates violence'and our actions must remain peaceful although direct. I don't think fences have feelings! Don't let the media and governments split the anti-war movememt we are all on the same side .Don't let egos get in our way co-operation is the key. One last point dont be afraid to show your face the balaclava does not create a healthy peace loving image...there are other ways to get on tv Dont damege the peacemovement's image cos you want to play cops and robbers. Lets Stop the War...Peace Lisa. ... read full story / add a comment

The Trinity College Branch of the Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) has organized a conference for March 8th around the title, “Poverty, Social Exclusion and the Law”. Speakers at the conference will deal with issues ranging from the interrelation of poverty with crime and educational disadvantage to the plight of travellers and refugees and the ideological content and function of law in modern bourgeois democracy. This conference will be of particular interest to those within Irish society concerned with tackling the cancer of social exclusion, so every organization and party should make an effort to be in attendance. The full details are below. This story had been posted previously, but given the recent comments made by the Community and Social pillar in the partnership talks it has a renewed relevance. ... read full story / add a comment |
