European gas prices recently went above ?58 per megawatt hour ? the equivalent of $100 per barrel of oil. This is "absolutely destructive for energy-intensive manufacturing", in the words of one industry analyst.

Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest against this state power grab.

The Galway Alliance Against War has claimed that attempts are being made by the authorities in Galway to stop an alternative air show being organised for Nimmo’s Pier, Claddagh at 1.30pm this Sunday. The local peace group plans to release 99 red balloons as a symbol of their opposition to what they term the “Salthill War Show”. This evening a member of the Gardaí went to the home of Niall Farrell, a member of GAAW, to inform him that the Superintendent wished to discuss “safety aspects” of the peace invent. ... read full story / add a comment

“If we can not know whether the courts are applying the law as passed by our legislators without editing or interference from another source our sovereignty is violated and every Act is now questionable as to its veracity. It also raises the huge question as to what subversive group has edited the legislation before it was published by the government stationery office”.

In this instance where it applies to the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 it means that Constitutional protections given to parents very likely have been violated by the courts for the past forty years through implementation of incorrect text.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions how we can get an actual copy of the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 as actually passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President from the office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, as the enrolled text which are by Constitutional mandate held there are the only “conclusive evidence of the provisions of such law” then please tell us. ... read full story / add a comment

While Over 20,000 people marched in Vienna yesterday in opposition to George Bush's arrival, Austria's "KinderGarten Anarchists" (KGA) used the opportunity to meet other young anarchists and spread their ideas to the youth of their nation.

George Bush became the first US president to visit Austria in over 27years yesterday as he arrived for an EU-US summit similar to the one held in Shannon (Ireland) in 2004. Police bomb squads blew up three suspicious packages and closed down the airport-city motorway in preparation for the visit while planned protests passed off peacefully with only a handful of arrests despite huge police numbers.

Next Tuesday 27th June in the year of our Lord 2006, UCD’s esteemed Craic Society will be hosting a fundraiser to help pay the (substantial) fines of our battle-weary believers, victims of a witch-hunt by Der College Authorities in September of last year.

After organising a fun-filled outdoor piss-up on campus, these Soldiers of Craic were victimised and fined by the college authorities, who seem hell-bent on forcing us to drink overpriced warm pints of Fosters for the rest of our lives instead of being at one with nature and Buckfast. Please come and support the struggle against the neo-liberal profit-driven upper echelons of UCD . ... read full story / add a comment

Residents in the vicinity of the construction being undertaken on the site of the recently demolished Fatima Mansions today protested at the entrance of their estate over the inadequacy of a long time promised traffic management system which had been promised to them prior to construction work beginning. Two simultaneous blockades were mounted at either end of Lorreta Road, residents joined and left with a fluctuating prescence of anywhere between ten and fifteen maintaining the line on either side of the estate. Marylands is an estate located close to the canal, just off Marrowbone Lane beside Cork Street. Traffic on any given day on Marrowbone Lane is hectic, with cars using it as a route to cut through the Liberties to reach Cork St, leaving a very narrow artery dangerously clogged with passage for cyclists generally untenable at peak hours without using the paths. ... read full story / add a comment

The Connolly Festival took place last weekend on Friday evening and all day Saturday. It was well attended by a large and diverse group of activists. On Friday night the same sex marriage discussion was packed to the brim with the meeting overflowing into the next room. What follows are some quotes and notes on what the different contributors said.

Marie Mulholand :

“More than 10 years ago two female friends of mine lived together in a couple and had a child together, living in London. One of these friends, Deborah, was involved in the Nicaraguan support community and wanted to visit Nicaragua. She drowned over there. Our union (UNISON) worked with Nicaraguan comrades to get the body home. Deborah had been ostracised by her family when she came out. They had had no contact with her since, didn’t know she had a child. When Anne arrived to the airport to the body arriving home, they found out that only the “family” had the rights to the body.

No one was at the ceremony, only her parents, who had ostracised her. It was a horrendous situation. There were no rights for Anne. It was a painful experience for all of us who were gay, it brought home with such force exactly where we stood. The experience never left me.”

Today Conor Lenihan , Minister of Children , who was vaguely
absent , the weeks of the constitutional crisis provoked by the release of Mr A by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy admitted to reporters
that he would listen to young people regarding the age of consent.
This was followed by a worthy statement, wherein he said that
though he would listen, the final decision on age of consent
rested with the deputies( one presumes in the Dail) and not with
the views of the people they hope to question on their sexual habits. ... read full story / add a comment

The Vocational Education Committees and their teaching staff unions seem to be in a bit of a muddle about whether or not teachers at Youthreach centres should be properly qualified. Youthreach is an alternative education facility for pupils aged between 15 and 21 who have not succeeded educationally within the ordinary school system. There can be a variety of reasons - social, educational, cultural - why this happens and the centres provide a potentially valuable opportunity to support a group of young people who would otherwise be seriously disadvantaged. ... read full story / add a comment
