The Sunday Business Post reports today on what it alleges is a 'major setback to government waste policy'. If it is really true that Indaver intend to abandon plans for incinerators in Cork and Meath, in point of fact it would be the best news ever for government waste policy - a victory for the environment and for the thousands of people around the country who are implacably opposed to this unnecessary, filthy and deadly form of waste disposal. But let's not get too excited. ... read full story / add a comment

A Derry prisoners activist campaigning and collecting on behalf of Political prisoners and their dependants has been arrested and a number of Prisoners Welfare collection boxes seized after the joint targetting and disruption of the weekly Derry collection on behalf of Republican prisoners and their dependants by the PSNI acting in concert with the Provisional Sinn Fein party structure in the city this morning . IRPWA activists carrying out the regular Saturday collection that has been going on for over 6 years outside the Credit Union were first surrounded by Sinn Fein members intent on disrupting their collection, followed shortly afterwards by the arrival of the PSNI , who arrested one activist and seized the collection boxes for the second week running as joint Sinn Fein and PSNI co-operation emerges on the streets of republican districts post election . ... read full story / add a comment

My dream began the other night when Joe Duffy - the legend, was on his way out of RTE studios - he said to Derek - I don't envy you Derek, believe me. This f........ insect has caused me and my Lifeline staff nightmares since last March. As we speak the Stroker Fahy is preparing for prison on Tuesday. His 97 year old mother is taking up residence in Galway with a far out cousin of Berties. Does anybody out there remember the Stroker McSweeney? This guy came in from America two years ago under Government approval - as Chief Advisor of Science and Environment to the Government. He turned out to be a Walter Mitty - the phd was created by no less than Podge and Rodge. This man was let go - I ask - Why was he not charged with Corruption too? ... read full story / add a comment

At 11:30 this morning, ten members of Cork Shell to Sea staged an occupation of Marathon Oil's Irish HQ in Mahon, Cork. Many of the people on the action were dressed as runners, both as a play on the company name and as an allusion to the marathon determination of the Erris communities and the campaign itself. Entry was swift, easy, and unforced. We were inside there for over half an hour before the Gardai arrived. A spirited and good-natured dialogue occurred between Cork S2S members and senior management at Marathon Oil. We left dragging our heels a little, making our departure protracted. ... read full story / add a comment

The National Symphony Orchestra mustered a complement of 104 players at its concert on Friday 23 March 2007 in the National Concert Hall. This number included six percussionists and one timpanist. It was the final performance in the career of cellist Linda Kelly. She joined the orchestra in September 1972 and conductor Grehard Markson called her up to the centre of the stage before the interval and presented her with a gold-ribboned box of chocolates. She looked cool and fit and accepted the applause of the audience indulgently and graciously as she did at the end of the concert when the conductor called her to his side again. ... read full story / add a comment
