Open Letter to Dublin City Council

Today, the 2nd March, the provisional university sent an open letter to the City Manager of Dublin City Council demanding a space for student-managed teaching and research and denouncing the neo-liberalisation of the university and the destruction of the public good. This is the second step in our campaign to reclaim a space to fight for education as a right and to take back the university. The text of the letter follows. ... read full story / add a comment

éirígí Dublin City Councillor Louise Minihan was handed a two month suspended sentence and a €1,500 fine on Friday last [February 25] following her convictions on charges of assault and of causing criminal damage. The convictions arose from a high-profile protest against the under-funding of the health service which took place on November 1, 2010. As part of that protest Louise poured diluted red paint over the clothing of the then Twenty-Six County Minister for Health Mary Harney at Cherry Orchard Hospital in Dublin.

These were a series of tweets received earlier tonight (late night, early morning Egypt time) from activists that had been demonstrating against the government in Tahrir Square. The most disturbing thing as someone receiving and trying to report these, was the media blackout that came along with the attacks. Al Jazeera was MIA. It has been on Egypt for a while. The Egypt Live Blog has been dormid for days and is now actually not even found in AJ's blogs page. There were NO news networks there to report on these attacks. Hours later, AJ produced a report, this after we bombarded their Libya live blog with pleas for coverage.

This is what we received between and around the hours of 8 and 10 pm US Eastern time.

(Thanks to the comrades of APIC(APICONG) for putting these together. http://apicong.blogspot.com/)

The first Re:Public2011 event in the Button Factory on the 15th of February was such a great success., we have been encouraged to hold another big Dublin debate as soon as possible. It was a full house and had really great energy. The audience were amazing. We trended on Twitter because people were tweeting so much. The candidates all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to engage. We hope that after they are elected and sitting in the Dail, they will still enjoy that opportunity, because the next Dublin debate will be with elected TDs ... read full story / add a comment

The right to adequate housing (Art.11 (1)) : . 12/13/1991.
CESCR General comment 4. (General Comments)

Habitability. Adequate housing must be habitable, in terms of providing the inhabitants with adequate space and protecting them from cold, damp, heat, rain, wind or other threats to health, structural hazards, and disease vectors. The physical safety of occupants must be guaranteed as well. The Committee encourages States parties to comprehensively apply the Health Principles of Housing 5/ prepared by W.H.O which view housing as the environmental factor most frequently associated with conditions for disease in epidemiological analyses; i.e. inadequate and deficient housing and living conditions are invariably associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates.” ... read full story / add a comment

Dylan Haskins is running as an Independent in Dublin South East. He's young, idealistic and already done many interesting things in his 23 years, from being a DIY punk setting up an all ages punk music gig venue to film making to helping set up Exchange in Dublin. Now he's running for election in tomorrows Irish elections.

Young and naive, perhaps. But a positive breath of fresh air, absolutely. Ireland is fucked at present, maybe Dylan and his bold (anarcho)punk inspired ideas might be exactly whats needed to get things on track? ... read full story / add a comment
