Since 1939 the number of admirals in the Royal Navy has shot up more than four-fold relative to the number of sailors. What do these highly-paid senior officers do all day, asks David Craig. It's more public sector waste.

Shell to Sea raises the issue of Ireland’s oil and gas resources during General Election 2011

Let's reclaim the 600 billion euro oil and gas giveaway

Shell to Sea members gathered outside the GPO on O’Connell St, Dublin on Wednesday 23 February, to distribute leaflets to the electorate on the giveaway of Ireland’s oil and gas, Shell’s environmental and safety short-cuts in Co. Mayo, and the collusion of the state in attacking peaceful protestors in Co. Mayo.

‘The 10 billion ‘barrels of oil equivalent’ in oil and gas which lies in Ireland’s Atlantic Margin area (which itself is less than one-third of Ireland’s total offshore territory) should be acting as an economic engine to lift Ireland out of recession and safeguard our future and our children’s future. Instead, the government is in the process of giving it away to oil and gas corporations,’ said Maura Harrington, Shell to Sea spokesperson.

‘We further note that within the past week, fresh licences are being given out for other areas of the country,’ continued Maura Harrington, ‘for the Lough Allen Basin, which has already had a gas find 9 times the size of Corrib, and the Clare area, on terms little improved on the Corrib Gas giveaway.’

“The new government will need to renegotiate the deals given to the oil corporations which sees Ireland having one of the worst returns to the State in the world.” said Maura Harrington.

Good, but we should have a referndum on the deal anyway and preferably cancel it.

It seems to me that it's also worth keeping in mind that Article 10 of our written Constitution (Bunreacht na hEireann) very clearly states that "all forms of potential energy" within the Republic of Ireland jurisdiction "belong to the State"; and, for those readers who might not yet realise it, that "Bunreacht na hEireann" literally means: "The Basic Law of the Republic of Ireland" in the Celtic language.

My hope is that our new Government, whatever its form, will be significantly challenged in public (by the opposition) regarding this crucially important social issue on Day 1 of our new Government appearing in Dáil Éireannn: and not a moment later!!

"The law is the law is the law."
