Social and environmental justice groups have been campaigning against the shadowy Article 133 Committee for many years now.

The way the Committee works is that the EU Council Of Ministers votes either by a Qualified Majority (QMV) or by unanimity (each Member State has a veto) to give the unelected EU Commission the power to open international trade negotiations in this or that sector of the economy. In the morning of June 14, 2001, a European Summit began in Sweden, in the city of Gothenburg. Maarten Blok (a 23 year old) had arrived in the city the previous night and had the bad luck to have chosen as a place to sleep, a school provided by the city council which on that morning was surrounded by the police for a mass arrest of all the people (more than 450) who happened to be in that place at that time. He was arrested and deported to the Netherlands. ... read full story / add a comment
