9 states globally have enacted laws which allow their courts put to trial those accused of genocide. Accordingly June 2003 Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzón jailed Ricardo Miguel Cavallo, (also known as Miguel Angel Cavallo), a former Argentine naval officer, extradited from Mexico to Spain pending his trial on charges of genocide and terrorism relating to the years of Argentina's military dictatorship (1976 to 1983) in which over 9,000 Argentinians and as many as 30,000 disappeared.
Today the Spanish courts ruled that Cavallo may better tried in Argentina. As a result, as of this morning the Argentinian state has 40 days to get their extradition process & papers in order. ... read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin mobilised across Ireland on Saturday 16 December demanding the release of IRA prisoners in Ireland and anti Imperialist prisoners across the world.

There were protests, solidarity collections, candlelit vigils, banners made and thousands of leaflets distributed to a very supportive public.

There was also a public meeting held in the English midlands by Socialist Labour Party highlighting the campaign.

The message went out loud and clear from the day of action - A.R.I.S.E and free the prisoners!

For the remainder of the month of December there will be further actions in solidarity with the prisoners.

Given as Shell’s site in Ballinaboy contains 400 acres, ten times more than the size of the refinery they are building at the moment, Shell to Sea activists have long suspected it is to be the first of many. A report published by the Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, earlier this year envisages the construction of more refineries and more pipelines in Erris, in addition to the Corrib gas development, involving companies other than just Shell, and with state encouragement.

Sinn Féin held a protest outside Leinster house today demanding the release of IRA prisoners. The protest was made up of Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin activists.

Some of Sinn Féin's TD's where also present showing their support for the campaign.

8 years following the GFA and 1 year following the IRA's decision to call an end to its armed campaign, there is no reason why IRA prisoners should still be in jail.

éirígí activists staged two successful pickets over the past number of days. The pickets were designed to show both solidarity with the community of Erris, Co Mayo as they battle against Shells plans to build an unsafe refinery and pipeline and also to focus public attention on those responsible for the entire Corrib gas debacle. The two éirígí protests were thus focused on the two main culprits; Shell and the head of the government responsible for the giveaway of Ireland's gas reserves, Bertie Ahern. ... read full story / add a comment

Concerned Citizens of Highfield in Limerick turn out to defend their natural heritage. Locally known as Chicken tree 1 + 2, are the old Monterey Cypress trees, the Giant Redwood and Turkey oak tree face possibly being felled.

Felling of younger trees occurred Friday and Monday on site, an act which is understood to be directly in breach of condition 6 of this developments Bord Planala planning permission (see condition 6 in full below).

Following today's pressure from these local residents and subsequent mediation with the developer and the council, a commitment have been given by the developer that all felling will cease until documents are sent to council. The residents expect the developer to honour this commitment.

More updates to follow.

Shell Exploitation and Production Ireland posted an operating loss of nearly fifty million euro last week.

With costs associated with their scheme to install a polluting refinery and experimental pipeline in North West Mayo spiralling, the troubled company was shown to be completely dependent on the goodwill and patience of its shareholders.

Among the figures making up the loss, it was noticed that SEPIL paid their 45 staff the amazing seven million, two hundred thousand euro.

This means that the company -which regularly claims it employs seven hundred people- pays it workers an AVERAGE of €160,000 per year (or €3,076 per week). Of course the company doesn’t divide up it wage bill equally, and some of the front men probably don’t get paid much more than the average indymedia reporter, which means someone in Corrib House is doing very well indeed out of losing €49.1 million.

There is a strong possibility that the judgment will be handed down in the High Court on Wednesday, December 13, 2006.

This case is of huge significance to all people with a disability, their family and friends and the professionals who serve them. Such is the importance of this case that our government spared no expense to fight Sean O'Cuanachain who has autism and his parents. The State employed two full legal teams, one for the Minister of Education, Mary Hanafin and the Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney and one for the HSE to win the right to deny Sean the education that was clearly benefiting him. The case was heard for an unprecedented 68 days from January to July 2006 at the expense of many million euros. ... read full story / add a comment
