Seven Irish people are fasting 24 hours as of 12pm today until 1 pm tomorrow when the Greek embassy closes. This is a solidarity action the Thessaloniki 7 who near death. They are outside the Greek Embassy on Upper Pembroke Street (just off Leeson Street). They are accompanied by several supporters and have attached several large banners to lampposts outside the embassy. The Gardai have demanded that the protest move slightly away from the entrance to the embassy. See the reports from before the action here http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=62337 The fasters would appreciate any company if anyone is in the area throughout the night. Although the weather is very cold the rain has been very light so far but the fasters are prepared with tarps and tent sheets attached to the railings of the embassy. ... read full story / add a comment

The EU has suppressed a report on European anti-semitism, deeming it to be too 'inflammatory'. The report blames the rising tide of anti-semitic incidents in Europe on muslim and pro-Palestinian activists. It also deals with the new phenomenon of left-wing anti-Jewish sentiment. Please see the link to the Guardian article. Note that criticism of Israel per se is not regarded as anti-semtic, but rather only abusive vilification is. ... read full story / add a comment

Kathy Kelly was one of the 51 arrested at the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning, Georgia, USA over the past weekend.

Kathy has contributed much to the anti-war movement in Ireland over the past year. She addressed the "Festival of St. Brigid" in Kildare on her way to Iraq in January. her talk was to have a major influence on the CW5 who disabled a US Navy war Plae the following week.

Returning to Ireland from Iraq after the US aerial bombardment to lead the Afri famine walk. Along with Caoimhe Butterly & the Pit Stop Ploughshares she addressed a public meeting at Wynns following the walk. ... read full story / add a comment

Mick Power presented a letter to the Government today. The letter referred to the increase in the length of time that you have to be on social welfare before you can apply for the Back to Education Entitlement Award from 6 months to 15 months. Just so you know, the 2002 Anti-Trespass Act has been used by Cork City Council to convict members of two Traveller families in Cork District Court. Michael Faulkner and Kathleen Delaney were both sentenced to a month in prison, suspended for two years and one year respectively. This raises a constitutional concern regarding basic human rights to shelter and liberty, both of which are threatened by this bizarre anomaly in legislation. ... read full story / add a comment

A view as to why Dubliners should support our current transport service. From my ongoing research into people's opinions of Dublin Bus, I have found that the vast majority of people do not realise the implications and changes that privatisation will bring. The introduction of the private sector into the public transport sector will not improve the commuters long term interests but will destroy a company that has developed into a profitable and publicly orientated transport service set in the interests of all the people.People say " bring on the private operators but they fail to realise that this ill thought opinion will bring with it, higher fare prices, less frequent service on non-profitable routes and the cancelling of routes that make no sense from a business aspect to maintain in use. ... read full story / add a comment

Here are some reports from the streets there. Much more at the related 'ftaaimc' link. Makes a mockery of Bush's statement about the protests in the UK during his visit - 'Isn't freedom wonderful'. Over 100 people gathered outside the US Embassy in solidarity with the huge number of protesters marching against the Bu$h visit. It was a noisy protest calling for the immediate withdrawal of US/UK troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Demands for an end to the use of Shannon as a US military base were made by all speakers. Richard Boyd Barrett, Chair of IAWM, reminded us that the small protests at he same spot during the invasion of Afghanistan grew rapidly, leading to the massive protests on 15 February last. We can do the same again as 20 March has been declared as a 'A Day of Action Against All Occupations'. ... read full story / add a comment
