Limerick City Council claim signs erected by the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace (LCMEJP) were an "incitement" The Council removed at least 5 large "No to Lisbon" referendum signs from locations around the city between the 26th May and the 11th June without informing anyone. Gardai in Henry st., Roxboro and Mary St. stations have been investigating this matter for over four weeks. The story was covered in the Limerick Leader two weeks in a row and in the Limerick Independent and the Irish Times but Council officials never thought it appropriate to contact the Gardai, LCMEJP or the printers event though contact details were on the signs. ... read full story / add a comment

in Dublin city centre particularly in the last few days. people aren't just saying they're voting No they're vehemently No and they're saying we could win this ...A lot of people have stopped by the CAEUC stall at the GPO to chat and debate, farmers, fishermen, taxi drivers, disgruntled fiannna failers etc. etc. really varied. it's amazing to hear people talking about politics like this, not just the treaty but the EU and where it's going. it feels like people are really getting into this. ... read full story / add a comment

A photo-review of WSM activities in Munster cities during the Lisbon referendum campaign. The Cork WSM branch, with the help of other comrades from Limerick and Dublin, did 4 info stalls on the streets of Cork, Limerick and Waterford as part of our campaign activities. Each was blessed with good sunny weather and a public mood in some sympathy with our anarchist vote No message. We gave out thousands of leaflets, and made new contacts across the cities. The Department of Agriculture is currently drafting legislation to update the Animal Welfare Bill, which will be brought to the Government for approval in the coming months. Although the summary draft of the bill focuses primarily on aspects of farming, such as the control and eradication of animal diseases, and the slaughter and disposal of animals/animal by-products, it also seeks to update the Protection of Animals Act 1911 on cruelty-related offences. After her visit to Bil'in where she was a guest speaker at the Bil'in International conference (where last year she had been shot and gassed by IDF soldiers http://www.beliefnet.com/blogs/godspolitics/2007/04/mai....html) Mairead Corrigan Maguire visited Hebron and surveyed the wanton destruction of facilities belonging to the Islamic Charitable Society. Property developer Bernard McNamara has been asked to pull out of two stalled development projects in Dublin so negotiations can begin with other contractors. On Sunday afternoon, a group of anti-war and human rights campaigners walked the 15 miles from the historic Treaty Stone in Limerick to Shannon airport, scene of Ireland’s complicity in war and torture. There they joined members of Amnesty International, Coisantoiri Siochana and others who had come to attend the monthly Shannon vigil. The vigil was, as always, a peaceful remembrance of all who have died, disappeared or been tortured as a result of the senseless “war on terror”. On Saturday 17th May, members of the National Animal Rights Association organised a demonstration outside the Pearl Brasserie restaurant. This was in protest of the fact that they serve foie gras, a so-called 'delicacy' that is produced so barbarically, it is illegal to farm ducks and geese for it in Ireland. Within minutes of the protest starting, activists were hosed by members of staff, and threatened by the owner (which resulted in the Gardai having to be called). Undeterred by what happened, activists returned to the Pearl Brasserie, on Saturday 31st May. It was a very visual and effective protest, which went by without incident. A short video clip was taken, which includes footage of the owner of the restaurant, Sebastien Masi (the one who threatened us), recording us with a video-camera. Have a look! Following the theft and damage of Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace signs in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, Galway on Friday night had a visitation of similiar malovolence when two large signs were torn from their anchorages, sliced into pieces and, bizarrely, after the top sections containing the text; "Israel Killed 52 Palestinian Children" were razored off, whatever, and stolen, the remaining pieces were neatly arranged on the grass - the signs highlighted the fact that Israel killed 52 Palestinian children in the first 18 weeks of 2008 and yet the EU, true to its hypocritical colours, refuses to impose sanctions. ... read full story / add a comment
