Over the past few years i have raised in indymedia the damage done to the working class movement by left sectarianism and advocated that attempts be made by left groups and left activists to work together much more. For this I have been attacked and slandered by the leadership of the old organization of which I was a part, the Socialist Party in Ireland. I am very glad to see that the Socialist party in Britain now appears to be taking steps in the direction of trying to work together with other groups on the left. I hope when I raise this again i will not be treated as some sort of heretic. Comradely, John Throne. ... read full story / add a comment

The DIBC and Éirigí organised a joint picket on Saturday (5th) , supported by other organisations and individuals, to protest the ill-treatment and torture of Basque political prisoners by the Spanish and French states. Over 530 Basque political prisoners are being systematically dispersed by the two states throughout their territories but away from their homeland and their families. Many prisoners and detainees complain of being ill-treated and some of being tortured. Meanwhile, political prisoners are having to serve longer sentences unless they renounce their former activiities and allegiances. ... read full story / add a comment

Now in the aftermath of a No vote the real reasons for the treaty are increasingly being made public despite the difficulty in getting these topics on the agenda even now as the Irish government 'reflects'. The rejection of the treaty has caused a headache for those politicians who favour EU unification, a unified EU military and further free trade liberalization. The French presidency is attempting to push through as much as possible on militarisation without full ratification. Apparently it was true that french white papers on defence were held over until after our referendum. Little good it did them. One of Sarkozy's problems is that military action undertaken by sub-groups of EU states without the need of agreement from all states has been scuppered by the Irish No as 'Structured co-operation' in Article 48 would have allowed for this and an EU military budget but Nice does not. ... read full story / add a comment

Shell are starting the dredging operation to begin laying the offshore part of the production pipeline to pump the raw gas from the Corrib field to their installation at Bellanaboy. The project has been criticised for separating the planning aspects of the offshore pipeline from the nine kilometres of onshore production pipeline which they want to cross the bog landscape and special areas of conservation around Rossport, county Mayo. The company have not got planning permission for route of the onshore pipeline, but are pressing ahead with the offshore pipe. Natural Resaources Minister Eamon Ryan, who once supported the local community in their fight against Shell's scheme, has made no statement in reaction to the Department of Transport's announcement (below). ... read full story / add a comment

In a move which is shocking in its cynicism and casual brutality the HSE in Laois, and I assume nationally, has stopped a free taxi service which had enabled parents with children in foster care to visit their children once a week. This attack on a marginal group with many health and social disadvantages is a clear indication of how theGovt intend to make the poor pay for its recession. The old , the sick and the poor yet again. We must organise to defend basic social services against these slash and burn tactics. ... read full story / add a comment

MP Peter Pilz (Green Party) Visits Martin Balluch in Prison Directly followed by a press conference outside the entrance to the prison Today MP Peter Pilz visited DDr Martin Balluch in the Josefstadt prison in Vienna. He described how he had to pass through three security checks before being able to speak to Martin over a telephone and see him through a glass screen. Their conversation was overheard and documented by a prison official. At a press conference directly after the visit Mr Pilz told the press that he now had an inkling as to what it's like to be locked up on remand. The opportunity to put questions to the Green Party Minister was seized by members of the press. MP Pilz's main contention is that, despite the Public Prosecution's accusations collapsing like a house of cards, so much so that not much is left over apart from the ominous paragraph 278a (criminal organisation), the 10 animal protectionists are still imprisoned. ... read full story / add a comment
