Iranian Secret Police arrested Jinous Sobhani, former secretary of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC) and the Organization for the Defense of Mine Victims, and seized her address book, telephone and other work records on 14 January 2009. Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate, is a co-founder of both groups.

The DHRC, a leading independent Iranian group providing legal defense of human rights violations, has been closed since 22 December 2008, when Iranian Secret Police forced their way into the Center during a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Iranian Regime have claimed that the Center was not a legally registered organization, although numerous other non-registered organizations function in Iran. The DHRC’s application for registration was denied several years ago. ... read full story / add a comment

There are many ways to “light” a battle field. In Gaza, no such area exists anyway. There are just people’s hovels, holes and “homes.” Such as they are after years of blockade and bombardment by Israeli forces. The White phorpous is a terror weapon perfect for driving people away, “never to return.” The Zionist dream is and has always been for many, at least, to remove the native Arab population and posses all of “Greater Israel.” This inhuman weapon nicknamed “Willie Pete.” is perfect for the effort. When it comes into contact with human flesh it moves down toward the bone, tissues evaporate. Victims may survive for some time before vital organs are compromised, effecting death. Parents watch the agony and may be forced to end their children’s wild sufferings by shortening their lives in “other ways.” ... read full story / add a comment

C/o email list "Gaza Friends" from the FREE GAZA MOVEMENT http://www.freegaza.org/

The morgues of Gaza's hospitals are over-flowing. The bodies in their
blood-soaked white shrouds cover the entire floor space of the Shifa
hospital morgue. Some are intact, most horribly deformed, limbs twisted
into unnatural positions, chest cavities exposed, heads blown off, skulls
crushed in. Family members wait outside to identify and claim a brother,
husband, father, mother, wife, child. Many of those who wait their turn
have lost numerous family members and loved ones.

Blood is everywhere. Hospital orderlies hose down the floors of operating
rooms, bloodied bandages lie discarded in corners, and the injured
continue to pour in: bodies lacerated by shrapnel, burns, bullet wounds.

I'm just back from a trip to Athens, where I was visiting a friend. Whilst there, I had the privilege to march with our Greek brothers and sisters in a demonstration.
(In case you've been living under a rock, Greek police shot and killed a 15 year old boy on the 6th of December) I think its important that I share my experiences with as many people as possible because in general the media outside of Greece tends to show the police in a far more favorable light than they deserve. Before I write about what I saw yesterday, I must say the Greek student movement is incredible. I have never seen a student movement as informed, passionate, driven and well executed as I did in Greece. We should all be taking a lesson from them. ... read full story / add a comment

"At about 1 am GMT Free Gaza boat - Spirit of Humanity - which was in international waters was surrounded by 5 Israeli boats. They questioned the 21 civilians on board the Free Gaza, asking them their nationalities and the purpose for their trip, which was to take 5 tons of medical supplies.

They gave 3 warnings that if they didn't turn back they would be fired upon (all this in international waters) and effected dangerous manoevres that put the safety of the boat in doubt as there was a high risk of collision. "

With the death toll from Israel's genocidal attack on Gaza now approaching 1,000 and the "international community" standing idly by twiddling its hypocrisy, Galway Free Palestine Campaign in empathy with the Gazans did an eight hour protest in Shop Street yesterday and will continue to do so until the killing frenzy stops.

At least one forthright man is not prepared to mouth the usual inanities about "restraint" and all that nonsense but unequivocally condemned Israel for its genocide: "The number of victims in Gaza is increasing by the day... The situation is untenable. It's genocide ... the Palestinian people have been subjected to subhuman treatment for decades and this (the Israeli offensive) is going to make matters worse." (Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, President of the UN General Assembly)

There were 20-30 people protesting at the dáil today, which included members of the public and IPSC, as the Israeli ambassador arrived for a hearing before the Irish foreign affairs committee.
There was a lot of media there also, but the ambassador slipped in through another entrance.

On January 11th. 2002 the U.S. opened its twilight zone and star chamber at it's military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Guantanamo has come to symbolise the fast track acceptance of kidnapping torture as mainstream U.S. policy. Shannon Airport in Ireland has been used extensively for refueling of illegal kidnapping flights. Tens of thousands of others are detained and tortured in U.S. gulags in Iraq, Afghanistan, Diego Garcia, aboard ships and elsewhere known and unknown. ... read full story / add a comment

About 50-70 people attended the pro-Israel protest at Leinster House today. It was hard to see exactly how many were there because so many media people went over to interview them. Someone said they counted twenty different journalist at one stage.

The majority of the people attending were quiet and subdued, with a bit of praying and singing (more like humming) going on, but three or four stood at the barrier and shouted abuse at the Palestinian counter demonstration. This was called at short notice, and outnumbered the Zionists by about three or four to one. ... read full story / add a comment
