40 years ago on May 1st, 1963, the Indonesian flag was raised over West Papua, marking the annexation of West Papua and the brutal suppression of a nation. Formerly run by the Netherlands and for seven months by the United Nations, the world community turned a blind eye as the West Papuans were sacrificed to the interests of “real-politik” and corporate greed. The question of West Papua is unfinished business for both the United Nations and the Netherlands. The Netherlands continues to be silent on the on-going genocide in West Papua, as it seeks to maintain “cordial” political and economic relations with its former colony, Indonesia. ... read full story / add a comment

Around 20 people winded their way through the damp city streets of Belfast to convene on the grounds of City Hall & engage in the wondrous act of conversation. The occasion for such a revolutionary event? - A ‘Public Speak Out Against War’*. The event was organised by individuals involved in ‘Our Kitchen’+ as an opportunity for people to get together & share their ideas & feelings about war & explore ways in which we can take action against war. (IMC editor: article by Kevin is added below as comment) Here are a few extra details from the cycle. The woman who drove into the back of the cyclist was brazenly aggressive and from the big smirk on her face seemed to be enjoying herself. She kept on trying to drive off even after the motorbike cop came over to take details. After he asked some of the cyclists to move off the road, she again tried to drive off forcing him to admonish her sternly. At this, the cyclists gave a big cheer. The wheel in question was very badly buckled which was a real pity as the owner had a really nice track bike with a single-speed hub. At the very least, it will require a wheel-build and a new rim to repair it. As seen ... read full story / add a comment

The US military has announced that at least three children aged from 13 to 15 are being held in the detention camp, Guantnamo Bay. Like other prisoners being held at the camp, they are being held indefinately without trial and are being interrogated by the military. They have been in captivity for over a year. Human Rights Watch have sent a letter to Donald Rumsfeld urging the United States to strictly observe international children's rights standards regarding the detainees. ... read full story / add a comment

I have in front of me a document issued by the National Bus and Rail Union. It’s one page long and makes one of the most impassioned, informed attacks on the ‘privatisation’ mantra at the heart of this governments approach to public needs. I didn’t get mailed it, read it in a newspaper – it was handed to me as a single A4 page that someone picked up on a bus. ... read full story / add a comment

Nine of the ten anti-war activists arrested during the mass trespass at Shannon airport on 12 October 2002 will be up in court in Tulla District Court again on Wednesday. Most pleaded not guilty at their last appearance and the case was consequently postponed. It is expected that they will receive their sentences on Wednesday. The nine were arrested following the successful pulling down of the fence and a 100-strong mass trespass on airport grounds following an anti-war rally at the airport. Five of those up in court are from the rebel city of Cork. All hail the Peoples Republic of Cork!! ... read full story / add a comment

The defense secretary has denied reports that the United States is considering an arrangement to have permanent access to some bases in Iraq. Long, dangerous and difficult work remains in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Rumsfeld said told reporters aboard his plane, which stopped in Ireland to refuel. The flight was delayed several hours as workers fixed brake pads on the landing gear which broke during the landing. "One ought not to think of this as a victory tour," Rumsfeld said, noting that coalition forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan still are coming under sporadic attacks. "The task before us in Iraq will take a lot of focused attention over a period of time." Rumsfeld said that in Afghanistan he will discuss with Afghan leaders and U.S. military officials a formal declaration that major combat is over. He would not say whether a similar declaration for Iraq is imminent. ... read full story / add a comment
