Rumsfeld was in Shannon for a few hours today

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday April 26, 2003 22:22author by Foiled again Report this post to the editors

His flight was delayed

The defense secretary has denied reports that the United States is considering an arrangement to have permanent access to some bases in Iraq. Long, dangerous and difficult work remains in both Iraq and Afghanistan, Rumsfeld said told reporters aboard his plane, which stopped in Ireland to refuel. The flight was delayed several hours as workers fixed brake pads on the landing gear which broke during the landing. "One ought not to think of this as a victory tour," Rumsfeld said, noting that coalition forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan still are coming under sporadic attacks. "The task before us in Iraq will take a lot of focused attention over a period of time." Rumsfeld said that in Afghanistan he will discuss with Afghan leaders and U.S. military officials a formal declaration that major combat is over. He would not say whether a similar declaration for Iraq is imminent.

Hey,
Donald Rumsfeld is the best Secretary of Defense the US has had in a log time. Would you prefer that we had Robert MacNamara as Secretary of Defense, who sent our forces to Souh Vietnam to fight with one hand tied behind their back? Most likely, you would

You're proud to have a corrupt captain of industry making decisions on who should live and who should die?

Do you think he reproesents anybody's interests except his own and those of his friends? How many revelations about his past does it take?, How many of his current actions are direct consequences of decisions he made in the past?

I suppose you're a big fan of Henry Kissinger too

This is IRISH indymedia, not US Indymedia. WE had Robert MacNamara as Secretary of Defense, YOU did. OUR forces were never in Vietnam, YOURS were.

America is only one country, not the world. And there are many, many, many people in the world who are dedicated to resisting America.

Don't let your imperialism get ahead of you.

Not surprising you have picked such a name.

Peace movements don't have enemies. They oppose war. Rumsfeld, Bush, Saddam, Blair and the like are the ones who have enemies.

Anyway when we've successfully infiltrated the CIA, US Secret Service etc. we'll know the whereabouts of Rumsfeld and his ilk at all times and organise protests. In the meantime, we'll do our best with what we have. Hope you'll see the light and give us a hand some time.

author by Gerrypublication date Mon Apr 28, 2003 02:42author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Hello,
For those who say the US is just one country, this is true-but it is a very powerful one. It has used this power not to oppress people, but to liberate them. Iraq is the latest example, and France is another example of a country that was liberated by the US. It is only one country, but a great one. We attempted to save the South Vietnamese from Communism, but largely because of Robert MacNamara's policy were a factor in our failure to do so. We were not in Vietnam for imperialistic reasons-if this were the case we would have launched a full scale invasion of North Vietnam.

ME: that's some mighty fine "liberation" you got there Mr

"About 5,000 Shia Muslims - 20,000, according to one Arab television station - marched through Nassiriya, one of the bigger towns on the banks of the Euphrates, shouting: "No to America, No to Saddam".

Like many Iraqis, they are ecstatic that Saddam Hussein has gone but they do not want the US either. They do not refer to "liberation" but to "aggression"."

Riots greet would-be leader of Mosul

Michael Howard in Mosul
Wednesday April 16, 2003
The Guardian

US special forces struggled to impose order in Mosul yesterday after a public address by the self-styled governor of Iraq's third largest city descended into a riot involving several thousand people, in which 12 were reported killed and at least 16 injured

(from Kut) "First the marines tried to get this dusty town's 200 police officers back to work, but 100 dropped out after local people warned them that only traitors collaborated with America.
Then the police station burned down. It was still smouldering yesterday as frustrated US troops began to realise that governing a people is much harder than defeating one.

"We've all just been issued with non-lethal equipment: batons, riot gas, shields, and stun grenades," Corporal Nathan Braden said.

Two hundred metres away several hundred Iraqis were guarding the gates of the governor's office, trying to ensure no that Americans entered. "No, no to America; no, no to Israel. Yes, yes to unity; yes, yes to Islam," some were chanting.

US forces worse than Saddam, Iraqi Shiite leader charges
(AFP)

23 April 2003

"ABU DHABI - A prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric, saying he was detained and beaten by US forces, charged on Wednesday that American methods were “worse” than those employed by the regime of Saddam Hussein.

“Our arrest by the Americans was worse than the arrests that Saddam ordered against our students,” Sheikh Mohammed al-Fartusi told Abu Dhabi television.

Fartusi, whose followers said he was detained Sunday by US troops along with five other Shiites, reappeared in Baghdad on Tuesday to cheers from hundreds of supporters who had held protests for two days.

“We were beaten .. spent a night with our hands tied behind our backs,” Fartusi said, adding however than an American officer did turn up and offer an apology.

“It was disgusting. Despite that none of our young men has pointed a weapon against America ... but next time, God alone knows what popular anger could lead to?”

US officials have said they could not confirm Fartusi’s arrest, but reports that the prominent mullah had been detained infuriated members of Iraq’s Shiite majority.

Protest organizers said Fartusi, Abdelrahman al-Shuani and Halim al-Fatlawi were arrested along with three bodyguards by US forces Sunday at a checkpoint 25 kilometres (10 miles) south of Baghdad.

They were returning from Karbala, where hundreds of thousands of Shiites have gathered for a massive pilgrimage that was due to climax later Wednesday.

The reported arrest threatened to become a major source of friction between the Americans, who toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein on April 9, and the Shiites, who account for 60 per cent of Iraq’s 25 million people."
